2022 Mutua Madrid Open – Women's Singles
Ons Jabeur defeated Jessica Pegula in the final, 7–5, 0–6, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2022 Madrid Open. It was her first WTA 1000 title, and she became the first Arab and African woman to win a WTA 1000 title. Pegula reached the final after saving a match point in her first round match against Camila Giorgi. Aryna Sabalenka was the defending champion, but lost in the first round to Amanda Anisimova. Simona Halep's loss in the quarterfinals guaranteed a maiden WTA 1000 finalist from the bottom half of the draw, a first-time champion at the Madrid Open, and a maiden WTA 1000 champion overall for the first time since the dissolution of the WTA Premier tournaments in 2020. She has a career high Women's Tennis Association (WTA) ranking of world No. 2 achieved on 27 June 2022. Jabeur is the current No. 1 Tunisian player, and the highest-ranked African and Arab tennis player in WTA and ATP rankings, ATP rankings history. Emma Raducanu (born 13 November 2002) is a British professional tennis player. She reached a career-high ranking of No. 10 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) on 11 July 2022, and is the current British No. 1. Raducanu is the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade at the 1977 Wimbledon Championships. Raducanu was born in Toronto and raised in London.
