2022 Men's Softball World Championship
The 2022 WBSC Men's Softball World Championship was the 17th Men's Softball World Championship, an international softball tournament taking place in Auckland, New Zealand from 26 November to 4 December 2022. Originally scheduled for February 2021, the tournament was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. New Zealand last hosted the tournament in 2013. It will be the 17th edition of the tournament. Argentina were the defending champions, and lost the third place playoff to the United States. Australia defeated Canada 5–2 in the final to claim their second World Cup. The WBSC Americas, formerly known as Pan American Baseball Confederation (COPABE, Spanish: ''Confederación Panamericana de Béisbol'', Portuguese: ''Confederação Pan-Americana de Beisebol''), is the governing body of baseball and softball within the Americas. History Talks of the need of a baseball confederation in the Americas sparked with the founding of the Confederation of European Baseball back in the 1950s, although it was not until 1984, during the World Cup played in Cuba, that 12 countries of the Americas finally voted in favor of a formation of a confederation. Softball Australia
Australia's softball history began in 1939 when Gordon Young, Director of Physical Education in NSW, began to promote the game in schools and colleges. In 1942, during World War II, US army sergeant William Duvernet organised softball as a recreation for US nurses stationed in Victoria. Another American, Mack Gilley, introduced the game to Queensland in 1946. Australia's first inter-state championship was played in Brisbane in 1947 and was won by Victoria. The second national championship was held in Melbourne two years later. It was at this championship that the Australian Softball Federation was formed with Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales being the founding members. WBSC Oceania
The WBSC Oceania, formerly known as Baseball Confederation of Oceania (abbreviated as BCO), is the governing body of baseball and softball within Oceania, and is responsible for the Oceania Baseball Championship. The Baseball Confederation of Oceania was established in 1989, it currently has 14 member nations. Not all member nations are represented in the executive committee which creates conflict within the region. The lesser countries tend not to support regional tournaments which contributes negatively to the growth of the sport in the region. Ray Brown, the BCO Development Officer, provides support throughout the region. Since 2006, the BCO has run a Regional Training Centre for aspiring players. The World Baseball Softball Confederation Europe, known as WBSC Europe, was established on February 10th, 2018 during a Congress of the Confederation of European Baseball and the European Softball Federation in Val d’Europe, France. the establishment of WBSC Europe followed the historic merger of the Confederation of European Baseball (CEB) and the European Softball Federation (ESF). As of September 2022, WBSC Europe counts 40 members for baseball and 39 for softball. The CEB was founded in 1953 with 5 members, which were Belgium, France, West Germany, Italy and Spain.
