2022 Gosport Borough Council Election
Elections to Gosport Borough Council took place on the 5th May 2022 as part of the 2022 United Kingdom local elections. The Liberal Democrats gained control of the council from the Conservative Party. Background The whole council was up for election following a boundary review. This reduced the size the council from 34 to 28. The seats up had previously been elected in 2018 and 2021. The elections in 2018, saw the Liberal Democrats gain four seats: two from Conservatives, and one each from the Labour and UKIP. The Conservatives however gained the sole UKIP seat, retaining their majority on the council. The other half of seats were elected in 2021, when the Conservatives gained one seat from Labour. Gosport Borough Council
Gosport Borough Council is the local authority for the borough of Gosport, in the county of Hampshire, England. The council consists of 28 councillors, two or three for each of the 14 wards in the town. It is currently controlled by the Liberal Democrats, led by Peter Chegwyn. The borough council is based at Gosport Town Hall. History Gosport was historically part of the parish of Alverstoke. Gosport's first form of local government was a body of improvement commissioners known as the "Gosport Town Trustees", established in 1763. In 1874 the town trustees were replaced by a Local Board (also known as the Urban Sanitary Authority) and the local government district was enlarged to cover the whole parish of Alverstoke, and so the new body was called the "Alverstoke Local Board". The loss of the Gosport name from its governing body was a subject of ongoing debate in the area for some years afterwards, and in 1891 the local board was renamed the "Gosport and Alverstoke Local Board". ... 2022 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections in the United Kingdom took place on 5 May 2022. These included elections for all London borough councils, for all local authorities in Wales and Scotland. Most seats in England were last up for election in 2018 and in Scotland and Wales in 2017. The elections coincided with the 2022 Northern Ireland Assembly election. In 91 cases, most of them in Wales, council seats were uncontested, each having only one candidate. Three seats in Scotland remained unfilled as no one nominated to fill them. Overall Across Great Britain, the Conservatives had a net loss of 487 seats in comparison to 2017 in Scotland and Wales and 2018 in England, whilst Labour gained 108 seats (22 in England, 20 in Scotland, and 66 in Wales). 2018 Gosport Borough Council Election
The 2018 Gosport Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Gosport Borough Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. The election saw the Liberal Democrats gain four seats: two from Labour, and one each from the Conservatives and UKIP. This reduced the Conservative Majority to one, remaining in control of the council, whilst UKIP lost their sole seat, in the Rowner and Holbrook ward. Voter ID trial Gosport was one of five boroughs in England operating a voter ID trial, whereby voters had to bring a form of identification with them in order to vote. There was some criticism of the pilot by local politicians ahead of the vote, and in the event 54 people were unable to vote as a result of the trial.
