Arfanul Haque Rifat
Arfanul Haque Rifat is a Bangladeshi Awami League politician who is the incumbent mayor of Comilla City Corporation. Rifat is serving as the general secretary of Comilla city unit Awami League since 2017. Career Rifat joined the Chhatra League in 1976 and became president of its Comilla city unit after two years. He also served as a senior vice-president of the district unit of Jubo League. He is serving as District Football Association president since 2010. In 2022 Cumilla City Corporation election, Rifat defeated his closest rival former BNP leader Monirul Haque Sakku by a margin of only 343 votes. Monirul Haque Sakku
Monirul Haque Sakku is a Bangladeshi politician and the first and immediate past mayor of the Cumilla City Corporation as a candidate of Bangladesh Nationalist party. On 19 May 2022, he has been expelled permanently from BNP for breaching party discipline. Career On 7 January 2008, Anti-Corruption Commission (Bangladesh) sued Sakku and his wife for illegal wealth. He was charged on 4 February 2016 but his wife's, Afroza Jasmine, was dropped. On 22 November 2017 a trial court found him innocent of all charges. On 5 January 2012, Sakku was elected Mayor of Comilla on a nomination of Citizens Committee. He is a former President of Comilla City unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He had been expelled from the Party. Sakku was nominated by Bangladesh Nationalist Party to contest the Mayoral election in Comilla in 2017. He was re-elected Mayor on 31 March 2017. Cumilla City Corporation is a self-governed municipal administration in Bangladesh that administers and oversees development and maintenance works in the city of Cumilla. The corporation covers an area of over 53.84 square kilometers in the Cumilla District. The body was known as Cumilla Municipality previously, until it obtained the City Corporation status by a ministry of local government declaration on 10 July 2011.
