2022 City Of Edinburgh Council Election
The 2022 election to the City of Edinburgh Council took place on Thursday 5 May 2022, on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election will use the same 17 wards used in 2017; each ward elects three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system (a form of proportional representation). After the 2017 election, the SNP and Labour formed a minority coalition to run the council. For the first time however, the SNP were the largest party. Background Composition Since the previous election, several changes in the composition of the council occurred. Most were changes to the political affiliation of councillors including SNP councillors Lewis Ritchie, Gavin Barrie, Claire Bridgman and Derek Howie and Conservative councillor Ashley Graczyk who resigned from their respective parties and became independents. City Of Edinburgh Council
The City of Edinburgh Council is the local government authority for the city of Edinburgh, capital of Scotland. With a population of in mid-2019, it is the second most populous local authority area in Scotland. In its current form, the council was created in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, to replace the City of Edinburgh District Council of the Lothian region, which had, itself, been created in 1975. The history of local government in Edinburgh, however, stretches back much further. Almond is one of the 17 wards of the City of Edinburgh Council. Established in 2007 along with the other wards, it currently elects four councillors. The River Almond flows through much of its territory, which covers the north-western edge of the city – Barnton, Cammo, Cramond, Davidson's Mains, Muirhouse (a 2017 boundary change addition which increased the population and consequently the number of councillors) and Silverknowes – and outlying communities at Dalmeny, Kirkliston, Newbridge and South Queensferry, adjoining West Lothian and the natural boundary of the Firth of Forth. Colinton/Fairmilehead (Edinburgh Ward)
Colinton/Fairmilehead is one of the seventeen wards used to elect members of the City of Edinburgh Council. Established in 2007 along with the other wards, it elects three Councillors. As its name suggests, the ward's territory is based around the communities of Colinton and Fairmilehead in the far south of the city's urban area up to the boundary with Midlothian, also including Bonaly, Comiston, Firrhill, Hunter's Tryst / New Swanston, Oxgangs and Redford, plus the separate hamlet of Swanston. Portobello/Craigmillar (Edinburgh Ward)
Portobello/Craigmillar is one of the seventeen wards used to elect members of the City of Edinburgh Council. Established in 2007 along with the other wards, it elects four Councillors. As its name suggests, the ward's territory is based around the communities of Craigmillar and Portobello in the east of the city's urban area up to the boundary with Musselburgh (East Lothian) and the coast on the Firth of Forth, also including the neighbourhoods of Bingham, Brunstane, Cleikimin, Eastfield, Greendykes, Joppa, Magdalene, Newcraighall and Niddrie. A minor boundary change in 2017 saw the addition of the western part of the Durham neighbourhood which, combined with housebuilding in the existing area (new and redeveloped), was sufficient to push the population over the threshold for a fourth councillor. Liberton/Gilmerton (Edinburgh Ward)
Liberton/Gilmerton is one of the seventeen wards used to elect members of the City of Edinburgh Council. Established in 2007 along with the other wards, it elects four Councillors. As its name suggests, the ward's territory is based around the communities of Gilmerton and Liberton in the far south-east of the city's urban area up to the boundary with Midlothian, also including Alnwickhill, Burdiehouse, Craigour, Ferniehill, Fernieside, Gracemount, The Inch, Kaimes, Moredun, Mortonhall and Southhouse, forming a suburban cluster that is almost physically separate from the rest of Edinburgh. A minor 2017 boundary change in the north of the ward saw the loss of Nether Liberton village, the Cameron Toll Shopping Centre and Inch Park, but the overall population increased slightly due to housebuilding in several other areas (Heritage Grange, The Limes, Manor Wood, South Gilmerton Brae, etc.). Leith Walk (Edinburgh Ward)
Leith Walk is one of the seventeen wards used to elect members of the City of Edinburgh Council. Established in 2007 along with the other wards, it currently elects four councillors. Its territory spans the area between Edinburgh city centre and the port of Leith to its north-east, centred around Leith Walk, the primary thoroughfare between them. Northern parts of the ward fall within the historic burgh of Leith, but other neighbourhoods such as Broughton, Powderhall, Hillside and Canonmills (divided between Leith Walk and Inverleith wards) were always part of Edinburgh. Bonnington and Pilrig are on the boundary between the two burghs but entirely within Leith Walk ward, which in 2019 had a population of 34,651. Morningside (Edinburgh Ward)
Morningside is one of the seventeen wards used to elect members of the City of Edinburgh Council. Established in 2007 along with the other wards, it elects four Councillors. As its name suggests, the ward's territory is based around the community of Morningside to the south of the city centre, also including Braid Hills, Bruntsfield, Burghmuirhead ( Church Hill and Holy Corner), Greenbank, Greenhill, Marchmont, Merchiston and Polwarth. A minor 2017 boundary change in the north of the ward saw the loss of the densely-populated Tollcross neighbourhood, but the overall population increased slightly due to housebuilding in other areas. At that time, the ward's name was also amended from its original title of Morningside/Meadows – the well-known Meadows park area to which this referred had never been fully within its boundaries. Sighthill/Gorgie is one of the seventeen wards used to elect members of the City of Edinburgh Council, established in 2007 along with the other wards. Its territory comprises a corridor of land in the west of the city with a northern boundary formed by the railway lines between the and stations, encompassing the Broomhouse, Dalry, Gorgie, Longstone, Parkhead, Saughton, Sighthill and Stenhouse neighbourhoods. Corstorphine/Murrayfield (Edinburgh Ward)
Corstorphine/Murrayfield is one of the seventeen wards used to elect members of the City of Edinburgh Council. Established in 2007 along with the other wards, it currently elects three Councillors. As its name suggests, the ward's territory is based around the suburban communities of Corstorphine and Murrayfield in the west of the city, also including Balgreen, Broomhall, Carrick Knowe, Ravelston and Roseburn, Saughtonhall, with four large open areas comprising two golf courses, Edinburgh Zoo and the playing fields surrounding Murrayfield Stadium. Inverleith is one of the seventeen wards used to elect members of the City of Edinburgh Council. Established in 2007 along with the other wards, it currently elects four Councillors. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent.
