2022 Christchurch Mayoral Election
The 2022 Christchurch mayoral election was part of the 2022 New Zealand local elections that took place on 8 October 2022, with the new mayor's term lasting to 2025. There are no term limits, but the incumbent three-term mayor of Christchurch, mayor, Lianne Dalziel, had announced that she would not be seeking a fourth term. One of the key election issues was whether or not to build a stadium which would cost $683m. Candidates Phil Mauger, who was first elected as a city councillor at the 2019 New Zealand local elections, 2019 local elections, was the first to declare his candidacy 14 months out from the election. Garry Moore (mayor)
Garry Anthony Moore (born 8 January 1951) is a former mayor of Christchurch, New Zealand, serving from 1998 to 2007. Subsequently, he was a board member of the NZ Transport Agency. He is a 'South Island enthusiast'. Early life Moore was born in Palmerston North in 1951 and received his schooling there. He trained as an accountant; first at Palmerston North Technical Institute and then at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology. He had come to Christchurch through his love for vintage cars; the Vintage Car Club was founded in the city and rural roads around Christchurch are ideal for excursions in old cars. He met his wife, Pam Sharpe, while they were both studying at Christchurch Polytechnic. They were married in 1977 and have two girls and two boys. Gerry Brownlee
Gerard Anthony Brownlee (born 4 February 1956) is a New Zealand politician of the New Zealand National Party. He has been a Member of Parliament since 1996, was Leader of the House, Minister for Canterbury Earthquake Recovery and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Fifth National Government, and served as his party's deputy leader from November 2003 until November 2006, and again from July until November 2020. John Minto
John Minto (born ) is a New Zealand political activist known for his involvement in various left-wing groups and causes, most notably Halt All Racist Tours. A 2005 documentary on New Zealand's Top 100 History Makers listed him as number 89. Today he is involved with the protest group Global Peace and Justice Auckland and the Unite Union. He also wrote a weekly column for ''The Press'' and was formerly editor of the (now defunct) '' Workers' Charter'' newspaper. Minto is a long-time member of the Post Primary Teachers' Association (PPTA) and also a national vice chairperson of QPEC, Quality Public Education Coalition (Inc) and co-vice-president of the Mana Movement. The Opportunities Party
The Opportunities Party (usually referred to as TOP) is a centrist political party based in New Zealand. It was founded in 2016 by economist and philanthropist Gareth Morgan and is today led by Raf Manji. The party is based upon an idea of "evidence-based policy", with policy priorities of "Universal Basic Income (UBI)", "Affordable Housing and Rent", "Smart Small Business", and "Climate Friendly Recovery". The party received 2.4% of the party vote in the 2017 general election, after which Morgan left the party. It received 1.5% of the party vote in the 2020 general election. Raf Alfred Manji (born ) is a New Zealand politician, with a background in governance, finance and social enterprise. He is currently leader of The Opportunities Party (TOP). Early life Manji was born in London to an Indian Muslim father and Irish Catholic mother and educated at the University of Manchester, graduating with a degree in economics and social studies. He worked as an investment banker, before migrating to New Zealand in 2002. He worked for non-profits and volunteering before becoming involved in the Volunteer Army Foundation. Duncan Alexander Webb (born 1967) is a New Zealand lawyer and politician, currently serving as Chief Government Whip in the House of Representatives since 2022. He has been the Member of Parliament for Christchurch Central since 2017, representing the Labour Party. Personal life Webb moved to Christchurch from London in 1974 when he was six years old.
