2021–22 La Liga
The 2021–22 La Liga is the 91st season of La Liga, Spain's premier football competition. It began on 13 August 2021 and will conclude on 22 May 2022. The fixtures were announced on 30 June 2021. On 24 June 2021, the Spanish Council of Ministers resolved that spectators could return to stadiums at full capacity by means of a modification of the royal decree regulating the 'new normality', in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Atlético Madrid are the defending champions, having won their eleventh title in the previous season. Espanyol, Mallorca and Rayo Vallecano join as the promoted clubs from the 2020–21 Segunda División. They are replacing Huesca, Valladolid and Eibar, which are relegated to the latter league in the previous season. The Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, commonly known simply as Primera División in Spain, and as La Liga in English-speaking countries and officially as LaLiga Banco Santander, Santander for sponsorship reasons, stylized as LaLiga, is the men's top professional Association football, football division of the Spanish football league system. The 2020–21 La Liga season, also known as La Liga Santander due to sponsorship reasons, was the 90th since its establishment. The season began on 12 September 2020 and concluded on 23 May 2021. The fixtures were announced on 31 August 2020. Real Madrid were the defending champions, after winning a record 34th title in the previous season. Huesca, Cádiz and Elche joined as the promoted clubs from the 2019–20 Segunda División. They replaced Espanyol, Mallorca and Leganés, who were relegated to the 2020–21 Segunda División. Exceptionally, this season the five substitutions were maintained in a maximum of three rounds per team, adopted in May 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. 2021 Segunda División Play-offs
The 2020–21 Segunda División play-offs were played from 2 June to 20 June 2021 and determined the third team promoted to 2021–22 La Liga, La Liga for the following season. Teams placed between 3rd and 6th position took part in the promotion play-offs. Regulations The regulations were the same as the previous season: in the semi-finals, the fifth-placed team faced the fourth-placed team, while the sixth-placed team faced the third. Each tie was played over Two-legged tie, two legs, with the team lower in the table hosting the first leg. The team that scored more goals on aggregate over the two legs advanced to the next round. If the aggregate score was level, the away goals rule was applied (i.e., the team that scored more goals away from home over the two legs advanced). The 2003–04 La Liga season, the 73rd since its establishment, started on 30 August 2003 and finished on 23 May 2004. Valencia were crowned champions for the 6th time in their history.
