2021 Attack On The United States Embassy In Yemen
The 2021 occupation of the United States embassy compound in Yemen was the breach of the former US Embassy compound in Sanaa by Iran-backed Houthi, Houthi militants on 10 November 2021. Twenty five U.S. contractors were taken hostage; the U.S. government declined to confirm how many, but said it was "unceasing in our behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts to secure their release." The U.S. State Department requested that Houthi forces vacate the buildings and return all property. Following reports of the detention of Yemeni United States Agency for International Development and other U.S. workers, a State Department spokesman declared that the U.S. “is committed to ensuring the safety of those who serve the U.S. government overseas" Houthi militants are not a designated terrorist organization since February 2021. Sanaa
Sanaa ( ar, صَنْعَاء, ' , Yemeni Arabic: ; Old South Arabian: 𐩮𐩬𐩲𐩥 ''Ṣnʿw''), also spelled Sana'a or Sana, is the capital and largest city in Yemen and the centre of Sanaa Governorate. The city is not part of the Governorate, but forms the separate administrative district of "ʾAmānat al-ʿĀṣima" (). Under the Yemeni constitution, Sanaa is the capital of the country, although the seat of the Yemeni government moved to Aden, the former capital of South Yemen in the aftermath of the Houthi occupation. Aden was declared as the temporary capital by President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi in March 2015. At an elevation of , Sanaa is one of the highest capital cities in the world and is next to the Sarawat Mountains of Jabal An-Nabi Shu'ayb and Jabal Tiyal, considered to be the highest mountains in the country and amongst the highest in the region.
