2021 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship
The 2021 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship was the 121st staging of the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Waterford County Board in 1897. The championship began on 28 August 2021 and ended on 3 October 2021. Ballygunner were the defending champions. Ballyduff Upper and Ballysaggart were relegated from the championship after being beaten in a series of playoffs. The final was played on 3 October 2021 at Walsh Park in Waterford, between Ballygunner and Roanmore, in what was their first ever meeting in a final. Ballygunner won the match by 2–27 to 0–13 to claim their 20th championship title overall and an eighth consecutive title. Lismore's Maurice Shanahan was the championship's top scorer with 7-43. Stephen Bennett (hurler)
Stephen Bennett (born 8 October 1995) is an Irish hurling, hurler who plays for Waterford Intermediate Hurling Championship, Waterford Intermediate Championship club Ballysaggart GAA, Ballysaggart and at inter-county level with the Waterford senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a full-forward. Playing career Blackwater Community School Bennett first came to prominence as a hurler with Blackwater Community School in Lismore, County Waterford, Lismore. He played in every grade of hurling and enjoyed some success. On 23 November 2011, Bennett scored ten points for Blackwater CS in their 0-11 to 0-08 defeat of Dungarvan Community School to win the Dean Ryan Cup. Patrick Curran (hurler)
Patrick Curran (born 2 March 1996) is an Irish hurler who plays for Waterford Championship club Dungarvan and at inter-county level with the Waterford senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a full-forward. Playing career Dungarvan Colleges During his secondary schooling at Dungarvan CBS, Curran was added to the amalgamated Colaiste na nDéise team. On 25 February 2012, he was just 15-years-old when he was selected at left corner-forward for the Harty Cup final against Nenagh CBS. Curran scored 1-02 from play and claimed a winners' medal after the 2–14 to 1–10 victory. On 24 February 2013, Curran was selected at centre-forward when the renamed Dungarvan Colleges faced Our Lady's Secondary School in the Harty Cup final. Passage GAA is a Hurling Club with Club Grounds the East Waterford village of Passage East with Players representing the Club from nearby areas of Dunmore East, Cheekpoint, Woodstown, Faithlegg, Ballymacaw and environs. Passage came close a number of times to capturing the Senior Hurling County Title losing three Waterford Senior Hurling Finals during the 1990s. De La Salle Gaelic football and hurling club is based in Waterford City, Ireland. The club competes in Gaelic games competitions organised by Waterford GAA board. The club has won the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship twice and the Waterford Senior Football Championship on 6 occasions. While having a notable record in gaelic football, today the club mainly focuses on hurling. Mount Sion ( ga, Cnoc Sion) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Waterford City, County Waterford, Ireland. It was founded by teachers in the school of the same name. Although technically separate from the school, the club still maintains a close relationship with the school, sharing the same sports facilities in the city. The club fields teams in both the Waterford Hurling and Gaelic football championships and has had many famous players, including John Keane, Philly Grimes, Tony Browne and Ken McGrath. Dungarvan GAA is a GAA club based in Dungarvan, County Waterford, Republic of Ireland. The club participates in both hurling and Gaelic football. The club currently heads the roll of honour in the Waterford Senior Football Championship with a total of 19 wins. Abbeyside GAA
Abbeyside () is a townland in Dungarvan in County Waterford, Ireland. It lies on the east bank of the Colligan River. History MacGrath's Castle was a notable landmark in Abbeyside, overlooking Dungarvan Harbour, until it collapsed in January 1916. It was situated at Friar's Walk in Abbeyside, near the Augustinian abbey. It was a six-storey tower house, reputedly built by the MacGrath family, and labelled MacCragh's Castle in the Civil Survey of 1654. While, as of the mid-18th century, it was still in a "good state of preservation", by the mid-20th century only fragments of the walls remained. These were subsequently removed, and no remnants of the castle remain visible above ground. Sport The local GAA club is Abbeyside/Ballinacourty GAA. Fraher Field
Fraher Field ( ga, Páirc Uí Fhearachair) is a GAA stadium, located in Dungarvan, County Waterford, owned by the Waterford GAA County Board. It has a total capacity of around 15,000. History Dan Fraher (1852–1929), an Irish language activist and scholar and promoter of Gaelic games, leased the land in 1885 and bought it outright in 1912. The stadium was renamed in his honour in 1995. With the obvious exception of Croke Park, Fraher Field has been the venue for more all-Ireland senior hurling finals than any other venue, having hosted the 1903, 1905, 1907 and 1911 deciders. Various improvements have been made to the stadium since 1995, including the addition of a new stand on one side of the pitch, and the improvement of standing facilities in general. Tallow GAA
Tallow GAA ( ga, CLG Tulach an Iarainn) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Tallow, in west County Waterford, Ireland. The club has won the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship four times, first in 1936 and more recently in 1980, 1984 and 1985. Tallow presently have four players on the Waterford county panel, James Murray, Aidan Kearney, Mark O' Brien and Thomas Ryan. Tallow GAA's ground is called Páirc Eamonn de Paor after the former Waterford hurler & coach, Ned Power who taught in the local school through the 1960s, 1970s & 1980s. Ned played for and coached countless Tallow teams in both hurling & football. He was widely regarded as one of the finest and most forward-thinking coach in GAA history, with many accolades and titles associated with his name.
