2021 Somaliland Municipal Elections
Mayoral and local district council elections were held in Somaliland on 31 May 2021 alongside parliamentary elections, after multiple delays. On 12 July 2020, Somaliland's major political parties reached a landmark agreement to ensure timely elections and to advance preparations for the elections. Negotiations between the parties and the National Electoral Commission settled on the earliest possible date by which the latter believed it would have sufficient time to prepare for the polls. Number of voters 1,065,847 people registered to vote in Somaliland's local elections. 552 candidates vied for 220 seats. Results Preliminary results showed that Kulmiye won a plurality of seats with Waddani close behind, while UCID came in third place. Kulmiye Peace, Unity, And Development Party
The Kulmiye Peace, Unity and Development Party ( so, Xisbiga Kulmiye Nabad, Midnimo iyo Horumarka; ar, حزب التضامن), also known as simply Kulmiye (), is a political party in Somaliland. The party was founded by Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud "Silanyo" in May 2002, ahead of the first municipal elections later that year. The party is mainly supported by people from the Habr Je'lo, Habr Awal and Darod clans. In the presidential elections of 14 April 2003, its candidate Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud "Silanyo" won 42.1% of the popular vote. He was narrowly defeated by Dahir Riyale Kahin. In parliamentary elections held on 29 September 2005, the party won 34.1% of the vote and 28 out of 82 seats. In the 2010 presidential election, Silanyo and his running mate Abdirahman Saylici claimed victory and comfortably defeated Kahin. Garadag
Garadag ( so, Gar Adag, ) is a key town in the Sanaag region of Somaliland. Overview Garadag was founded in 1934 and is located northwest of Xudun and east by road from War Idaad. One of the main Landmarks of the town is "Geedka Garadag", a famous tree under which numerous peace meetings or ''shirs'' have taken place over the years. The name ''Garadag'' in the Somali language means "a difficult case", in reference to a marital dispute between two men regarding a girl that was promised to one of the men but married off to the other. In November 1992, a peace conference by Habr Je'lo, Dhulbahante, Warsangali and Gahayle was held in Garadag. Borama District
Borama District ( so, Degmada Boorama) is a district of the Awdal region in Somaliland. Demographics The Awdal region in which the district is situated is inhabited by people from the Somali ethnic group, with the Gadabuursi subclan of the Dir especially well represented and considered the predominant clan of the region. Federico Battera (2005) states about the Awdal Region: "Awdal is mainly inhabited by the Gadabuursi confederation of clans." Buuhoodle
Buuhoodle ( so, Buuhoodle, ar, بووهودل), also known as Bohotle, is the second largest city in the Togdheer region of Somaliland and also the capital of the Cayn region under Puntland. It is a prominent border town for movements of goods to and from Somaliland and the Somali Region of Ethiopia. The surrounding district is rich in both livestock and fledgeling agriculture. Xudun District
Hudun District ( so, Degmada Xudun) is a historical district in the eastern Sool region of Somaliland. Its capital lies at Hudun. The border between Hudun District and Las Anod District goes through the town of buur anod, also called buur aanood, a town that lies in between the towns of dib shabeel to the north, and daryaha (daryaha) to the south. Aynabo District ( so, Degmada Caynaba), colloquially known as Sarar ( so, Saraar), is a district in the northern Sool region of Somaliland. Its capital lies at Aynabo. Other settlements in the district includes Wadaamagoo, War Idaad, Berkad Ali Hersi, Godheeli, Habariheshay, Ceeldhaab, Ceegaag, Oog, Badweyn, Gowsaweyne and Qoridheere.
