2021 San Antonio FC Season
The 2021 San Antonio FC season was the club's sixth season of existence. Including the San Antonio Thunder of the original NASL and the former San Antonio Scorpions of the modern NASL, it was the 12th season of professional soccer in San Antonio. The club played in the USL Championship, the second division of the United States soccer league system, and would have participated in the U.S. Open Cup, however the field of teams was reduced due to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic concerns and eventually cancelled. San Antonio FC
San Antonio FC is a professional soccer club based in San Antonio, Texas. It competes in the USL Championship, the second-highest level of the United States soccer league system, as a member of the Western Conference. History San Antonio FC was awarded the thirty-first USL franchise on January 7, 2016. The establishment of the club, along with the concurrent purchase of Toyota Field by the City of San Antonio and Bexar County, was part of a plan by local officials to obtain an expansion franchise in Major League Soccer. As a result, the San Antonio Scorpions franchise of the North American Soccer League was shut down. The first head coach in club history was former Elon University men's soccer coach and Orlando City SC Pro Academy Director, Darren Powell. North American Soccer League (2011–2017)
The North American Soccer League (NASL) was a professional men's soccer league based in the United States. The league was named for, but had no connection to, the original North American Soccer League. The later NASL was founded in 2009, and began play in 2011 with eight teams. From 2013 through 2017, the NASL used a split-season schedule running from April to early November, with a four-week break in July. The spring and fall champions, along with the two teams with best combined spring/fall records met in a four-team single-elimination tournament known as ''The Championship''. The winner of the final claimed the Soccer Bowl trophy. Axel Sjöberg
Axel Sjöberg (; born 8 March 1991) is a Swedish former Association football, footballer. Career Early career Sjöberg began his career with Helenelunds IK in his hometown at age four before moving to the academy of Djurgårdens IF Fotboll, Djurgårdens IF, long-time member of the Allsvenskan, the top tier of the Swedish football league system at age 6 in 1997. Sjöberg stayed with the club until 2009, when he signed with Sollentuna United FF of Swedish Football Division 2, Division 2 for 2010. Jasser Khmiri (born 27 July 1997) is a Tunisian professional footballer who plays as a defender for San Antonio FC in the USL Championship. Connor Maloney
Connor Austin Maloney (born May 18, 1995) is an American soccer player who plays as a full-back for USL Championship club San Antonio FC. His senior career includes stints with four different American clubs and experience in Major League Soccer. Playing collegiately at Penn State, Maloney was the 2014 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. A native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Maloney graduated from Bishop McDevitt High School, where he was a two-sport athlete and set multiple school and state records. He played collegiately at Pennsylvania State University, where he was a two-time captain for the Nittany Lions and a three-time All-Big Ten First Team honoree. Héctor Joaquín Varela (born 25 March 1997) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Deportivo Riestra. Kortne Thompson-Ford (born January 26, 1996) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a center-back for Sporting Kansas City in Major League Soccer. Mathieu Deplagne (born 1 October 1991) is a French professional footballer who plays as a right-back. Career Deplagne started his career with Montpellier HSC, with whom he won the Ligue 1 championship in the 2011–2012 season. Mitchell Taintor (born September 11, 1994) is an American professional soccer player who currently plays as a defender for San Antonio FC in the USL Championship. Career Youth Prior to his collegiate career, Taintor represented New England Revolution's youth set-up. STAR Soccer Complex
The South Texas Area Regional Soccer Complex is a 13 field soccer venue in San Antonio, Texas, United States. It is used primarily for youth club soccer and adult league soccer. It is located in the former Longhorn Quarry, adjacent to Toyota Field, and Morgan's Wonderland, and near Heroes Stadium. Toyota Field was originally owned and operated by S.O.A.R. Inc., a non-profit organization founded by Gordon Hartman. The complex was affiliated with the San Antonio Scorpions of the North American Soccer League, also owned by Hartman.
