2021 New York City Council Election
The 2021 New York City Council election were held on November 2, 2021. The primary elections were held on June 22, 2021. There were several special elections for seats vacated in 2020 and early 2021; these special elections were the first to use ranked-choice voting in city council elections after it was approved by a ballot question in 2019. Due to redistricting after the 2020 Census, candidates also ran for two-year terms instead of four-year terms for the first time, stemming from the New York City Charter overhaul in 1989. Four-year terms will resume in the 2025 election after another two-year election in 2023. Incumbents not seeking re-election Term-limited incumbents 28 council members (26 Democrats and 2 Republicans) are prevented from seeking a third (fourth for pre-2010 council members) consecutive term due to term limits that were renewed by voters in a ballot referendum in 2010. The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of New York City. It has 51 members from 51 council districts throughout the five Borough (New York City), boroughs. The council serves as a check against the Mayor of New York City, mayor in a mayor-council government model, the performance of city agencies land use decisions, and legislating on a variety of other issues. It also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget. Members elected in or after 2010 are limited to two consecutive four-year terms in office but may run again after a four-year respite; however, members elected before 2010 may seek third successive terms. Ben Kallos
Benjamin J. Kallos (born February 5, 1981) is an American attorney and politician who represented the 5th district of the New York City Council from 2014 to 2021, and now serves in the Executive Office of the President in the United States Digital Service. He is a Democrat. The district includes East Harlem, Midtown, Murray Hill, Roosevelt Island and the Upper East Side of Manhattan. New York City's 20th City Council District
New York City's 20th City Council district is one of 51 districts in the New York City Council. It has been represented by Democrat Sandra Ung since 2022. She succeeded Republican-turned-Democrat Peter Koo, who was term-limited in 2021. Geography District 20 is based in the Queens neighborhood of Flushing, covering its downtown areas as well as its Murray Hill and Queensboro Hill subsections. Ydanis Rodríguez (born June 18, 1965) is the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation and a politician who formerly represented the 10th district on the New York City Council. New York City's 10th City Council district is one of 51 districts in the New York City Council. It is currently represented by Democrat Carmen De La Rosa, who took office in 2022.
