2021 Indian Punjab Political Crisis
On 18 September 2021, several government members of the Punjab Legislative Assembly from Indian National Congress in India attended a Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting, which may or may not lead to the change of CM of the Indian National Congress in Punjab. This led to the resignation of Amarinder Singh from the chief minister post on 18 September 2021 at 4:30 pm. Apart from Navjot Singh Sidhu, former Punjab Congress unit chiefs Sunil Jakhar and Pratap Bajwa are said to be the frontrunners for the top job in the state, which is scheduled to hold the assembly elections early next year. State ministers Sukhjinder Randhawa, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa are also said to be the contenders for the chief minister’s post. Politics in reorganised present-day Punjab is dominated by mainly three parties – Indian National Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal). Since 1967, Chief Minister of Punjab has been predominantly from Jat Sikh community despite its 21 percent state population. 2021 Lynchings For Sacrilege In Punjab
The 2021 lynchings in Punjab, India refers to the widely reported lynching incidents that occurred between December 18-19, 2021, at two Sikh temples in Punjab, India in which enraged mobs killed 2 men in response to alleged acts of sacrilege. Lynching incidents First Incident (18 December) The first incident took place on December 18, 2021 at the Amritsar Golden Temple, the holiest shrine for Sikhs, when a man barged into the inner sanctum, where Sikhism's holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, is kept. The man grabbed a ceremonial sword placed next to the holy book; but was overpowered by Sikh guards and worshippers, and then beaten to death before the Police arrived at the scene. 2020–2021 Indian Farmers' Protest
The 2020–2021 Indian farmers' protest was a protest against three farm acts that were passed by the Parliament of India in September 2020. The acts, often called the Farm Bills, have been described as "anti-farmer laws" by many farmer unions, and politicians from the opposition who say it would leave farmers at the "mercy of corporates". The farmers have also demanded the creation of a minimum support price (MSP) bill, to ensure that corporates cannot control the prices. The union government, however, maintains that the laws will make it effortless for farmers to sell their produce directly to big buyers, and stated that the protests are based on misinformation. Ambika Soni (born 13 November 1942) is an Indian politician belonging to Indian National Congress. She had served as Minister of Information and Broadcasting. She was a Member of Parliament representing the state of Punjab in the Rajya Sabha. Harish Singh Rawat (born 27 April 1948) is an Indian politician who was Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2014 to 2017. Sunil Kumar Jakhar (born 9 February 1954) is an Indian politician and member of Bharatiya Janata Party, who was formerly president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (2017- 2021). Elected consecutively three times from Abohar, Punjab constituency (2002-2017), he was a Leader of opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2012-2017. He was a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) for five decades until 2022.
