2021 Games Of The Small States Of Europe
The 2021 Games of the Small States of Europe, also formerly known as the XIX Games of the Small States of Europe, was a cancelled sporting event, previously scheduled to take place in Andorra la Vella, the capital city of Andorra. Andorra previously held the 1991 Games of the Small States of Europe, 1991 and the 2005 Games of the Small States of Europe, 2005 installments of the Games. The 2021 games were cancelled due to the rescheduling of the 2020 Summer Olympics in July 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, with Andorra looking to instead host the 2025 games. Bidding and preparation The nations of the Games of the Small States of Europe, GSSE host the event on a rotational basis every two years. Although Malta was originally expected to host the 2021 Games, they instead decided to swap places with Andorra in order to give enough time to build the necessary infrastructure. Games Of The Small States Of Europe
The Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) is a biennial multi-sport event, launched by the Republic of San Marino, organized by and featuring the National Olympic Committees of nine European small states since 1985. The Games are held at the end of May or beginning of June and feature competition in nine Summer Olympic sports. Member countries The games are organized by the members of the European Olympic Committees (EOC). From its initial forming at the 1984 Olympics through 2009, there were eight members; the group's ninth (Montenegro) and tenth member (Vatican City) were added in 2009 and 2018 respectively. Members all have a population of less than one million people (Cyprus is the only exception; however, its population was below one million in 1984).
