The 31st British Academy Scotland Awards were held on 20 November 2021 at BBC Pacific Quay in a socially distanced, closed-studio show, honouring the best Scottish film and television productions of 2020. BBC Pacific Quay
BBC Pacific Quay is BBC Scotland's television and radio studio complex at Pacific Quay, Glasgow, Scotland. Opened by then Prime Minister Gordon Brown on 20 September 2007, the studios are home to BBC Scotland's television, radio and online services and the headquarters of the BBC in Scotland. Location The studios are located adjacent to the Glasgow Science Centre, across the river from the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre and adjacent to the studios of commercial broadcaster STV. The new building is one of the most modern digital broadcasting facilities in the world, complete with the BBC's first HD-capable newsroom. Functioning Television studio facilities based at BBC Pacific Quay were rebranded as "Street @ BBC Scotland" in 2018. Amir El-Masry
Amir El-Masry ( ar, أمير المصري; born 2 August 1990) is an Egyptian-British actor. He won a Scottish BAFTA for his performance in the film ''Limbo'' (2020) and was nominated for a British Independent Film Award. He was named a 2020 BAFTA Breakthrough Brit and a 2021 '' Screen International'' Star of Tomorrow. El-Masry debuted in the Egyptian comedy ''Ramadan Mabrouk Abu El Alamein Hamouda'' (2008), for which he was awarded Best Movie Debut at the Egyptian Cinema Oscar Festival. Early life and education El-Masry was born in Cairo, Egypt and brought up in Acton, West London. He attended Tower House School and the Harrodian School. ''Mangrove'' is a 2020 historical drama film directed by British director Steve McQueen and co-written by McQueen and Alastair Siddons, about the Mangrove restaurant in west London and the 1971 trial of the Mangrove Nine. Small Axe (anthology)
''Small Axe'' is a British anthology film series, created and directed by Steve McQueen. The anthology consists of five films that tell distinct stories about the lives of West Indian immigrants in London from the 1960s to the 1980s. Two episodes of the series were selected into the 2020 Cannes Film Festival. The series premiered on 15 November 2020 on BBC One in the United Kingdom and on 20 November 2020 on Amazon Prime Video in the United States. The title references a proverb – "Small axe fall big tree" or "If you are the big tree, we are the small axe" – that was popularised by Bob Marley in his 1973 song " Small Axe". Jack Andrew Lowden (born 2 June 1990) is a Scottish actor. Following a four-year stage career, his first major international onscreen success was in the 2016 BBC miniseries '' War & Peace'', which led to starring roles in feature films. ''Together'' is a 2021 British comedy-drama television film written by Dennis Kelly and directed by Stephen Daldry. It stars James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan as a couple re-evaluating their relationship during the COVID-19 pandemic, with Samuel Logan making an appearance as their son, Artie. It was shot in ten days in Kensal Rise, London. The film was broadcast in the United Kingdom on BBC Two on 17 June 2021. Upon release, it received generally positive reviews from critics, with some calling it a "claustrophobic", "brilliant", and "honest" film set during the pandemic. However, a mixed response was given on its use of monologues and fourth wall breaks.
