2021 AFL Finals Series
The 2021 Australian Football League finals series was the 125th annual edition of the VFL/AFL finals series. The series was played over five weeks in August and September, culminating in the 2021 AFL Grand Final. The top eight teams from the 2021 AFL Premiership season qualified for the finals series. AFL finals series have been played under the current format since 2000. Qualification Venues Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, many clubs played home finals outside their home states for the second consecutive season. The New South Wales venues were unavailable because of a large outbreak in Sydney which precluded interstate travel through the state, and both Sydney clubs had been based outside the state for the last two months of the home-and-away season. The 2021 AFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football match contested between and the at Optus Stadium in Perth, Western Australia, on Saturday 25 September 2021. It was the 126th annual grand final of the Australian Football League (AFL), staged to determine the premiers of the 2021 AFL season. As the top-placed side on the ladder at the end of the 2021 home-and-away season, Melbourne finished minor premiers, whereas the Western Bulldogs faded in the final four home-and-away games to finish 5th, thus needing to win all of their finals games to qualify for the grand final. The match was played at Optus Stadium in Perth because an ongoing COVID-19 lockdown prevented the match from being played with spectators at its contracted ground, the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Victoria. Mathew Nicholls (born 1977) is an Australian rules football field umpire in the Australian Football League. At the end of 2013, Nicholls had umpired 202 career games in the AFL. Matt Stevic
Matt Stevic (born 12 November 1979) is an Australian rules football field umpire in the Australian Football League (AFL). He has umpired 449 career games in the AFL, which has him sitting currently at number 4 on the All-time Games umpired list. The 449 games includes ten grand finals. Stevic was born in Leongatha, Victoria. He made his debut umpiring his first match in the AFL in Round 1, 2004, between the Western Bulldogs and the West Coast Eagles at the Telstra Dome, and he has since umpired internationally. Jacob Mollison is an Australian rules football umpire currently officiating in the Australian Football League. Before umpiring in the AFL, he umpired in the 2002, 2003 and 2004 Ovens & Murray Football League Grand Finals and the 2006 and 2007 Victorian Football League (VFL) Grand Finals. Simon Meredith (umpire)
Simon Meredith (born 11 March 1975) is an Australian rules football field umpire in the Australian Football League. One of the league's most experienced umpires, he has officiated in seven AFL Grand Finals: 2012, 2013, 2014,2016, 2017 and 2020 and 2022. In June 2014, Meredith suffered severe headaches whilst umpiring a game between Sydney and Port Adelaide. He was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a subarachnoid hemorrhage. He spent over a week in hospital before returning to Melbourne. He recovered fully and went on to umpire in that season's grand final. Curtis Deboy is an Australian rules football umpire currently officiating in the Australian Football League. He first umpired in the Central District Junior Football League in 2004.
