Austerity is a set of political-economic policies that aim to reduce government budget deficits through spending cuts, tax increases, or a combination of both. There are three primary types of austerity measures: higher taxes to fund spending, raising taxes while cutting spending, and lower taxes and lower government spending. Austerity measures are often used by governments that find it difficult to borrow or meet their existing obligations to pay back loans. The measures are meant to reduce the budget deficit by bringing government revenues closer to expenditures. 2020 Moss Side Shooting
At about 12:30 am on 21 June 2020, two young men were shot dead at a street party in Moss Side, an inner-city area of Manchester in North West England. Background The shooting took place at an afterparty, illegal under COVID-19 lockdown rules. The after party was an unplanned event that followed a Black Lives Matter barbecue that had been earlier held nearby, but was unconnected to this prior event, which peacefully finished at 20:00. Incident During a night time street party in a car park in Moss Side at the junction of Caythorpe Street, Broadfield Road, and Bowes Street a man opened fire on those attending at about 00:30 BST, causing them to run screaming from the area. 2020 Reading Stabbings
On 20 June 2020, shortly before 19:00 BST, a man with a knife attacked people who were socializing in Forbury Gardens, Reading, Berkshire, United Kingdom. Three men died from their wounds, and three other people were seriously injured. A 25-year-old Libyan male refugee named Khairi Saadallah was arrested nearby shortly afterwards. Saadallah was a former member of the Libyan militant group Ansar al-Sharia. He was charged with three counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder; he pleaded guilty. In January 2021, Saadallah was sentenced to a whole-life term. Murder Of Arthur Labinjo-Hughes
Arthur Labinjo-Hughes (4 January 2014 – 17 June 2020) was a six-year-old child living in the West Midlands, England who was abused and subsequently killed by his carers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The boy was mistreated over the course of several months by his father, Thomas Hughes, and his father's partner, Emma Tustin. This culminated on 17 June 2020 with Tustin killing Arthur via blunt force trauma to his head. Tustin and Thomas Hughes were convicted on murder and manslaughter charges, respectively, in December 2021. After Arthur's parents separated in his infancy, he was initially cared for by his mother Olivia Labinjo-Halcrow. When Labinjo-Halcrow killed her partner in February 2019, responsibility for the boy was transferred to his father. Aya Hachem was murdered in Blackburn, Lancashire, England on 17 May 2020. Aya Hachem was a University of Salford law student from Lebanon who moved to the UK in 2011. At 15:00 BST on 17 May 2020, Hachem was mistakenly shot dead by hitman Zamir Raja in King Street, Blackburn, a large town in Lancashire, North West England. The killing was a drive-by shooting ordered by Feroz Suleman, manager of a tyre business whose intended target was rival businessman Pachah Khan who was nearby at the time. After a 12-week trial at Preston Crown Court in 2021, seven men who played a part in the planned shooting were convicted of murder on 3 August and sentenced to life imprisonment on 5 August.
