2020 Wilmington Mayoral Election
The 2020 Wilmington mayoral election was held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, to elect the mayor of Wilmington, Delaware. Incumbent mayor Mike Purzycki won re-election to a second term. Mike Purzycki first won election in 2016 with 82.2% of the vote. Purzycki faced a competitive primary, winning the Democratic nomination by a 7.26% margin, a difference of 1,019 votes. Purzycki won 100% of the vote in the general election as he was the only candidate on the ballot. Mike Purzycki
Michael S. Purzycki (born 1945) is an American businessman and politician currently serving as the 56th Mayor of Wilmington, Delaware. Prior to serving as Mayor, Purzycki served as the executive director of the Riverfront Development Corporation and helped redevelop the Wilmington Riverfront. Originally from Newark, New Jersey, Purzycki attended the University of Delaware and had a short National Football League career for the New York Giants in the 1967–1968 season. Early life Purzycki was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1945. He graduated from Seton Hall Preparatory School in 1963 and received a football scholarship to the University of Delaware. While at the University of Delaware, he played football for four years and set every Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens football receiving record. Wilmington ( Lenape: ''Paxahakink /'' ''Pakehakink)'' is the largest city in the U.S. state of Delaware. The city was built on the site of Fort Christina, the first Swedish settlement in North America. It lies at the confluence of the Christina River and Brandywine Creek, near where the Christina flows into the Delaware River. It is the county seat of New Castle County and one of the major cities in the Delaware Valley metropolitan area. Wilmington was named by Proprietor Thomas Penn after his friend Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, who was prime minister during the reign of George II of Great Britain. Velda Jones-Potter
Velda Jones-Potter is a Delaware businesswoman and politician. She was appointed by Jack Markell to finish out his term as Delaware State Treasurer when he was elected governor in 2008. She lost her bid for election in the 2010 Democratic primary to Chip Flowers. She is currently the Wilmington City Treasurer. Early life and career Jones-Potter attended P. S. Dupont High School. She was the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. Jones-Potter obtained her MBA from Indiana University. She worked for DuPont for 17 years and served as an executive vice president for MBNA.
