2020 Virginia Beach Mayoral Election
The Virginia Beach mayoral election of 2020 took place on November 3, 2020. Voters elected the next Mayor of Virginia Beach, which has a council-manager system of government. The mayor presides over city council meetings and serves as the ceremonial head and spokesperson of the city. The mayor is elected to a four-year term through direct election and the office has no term limits. The mayoral election occurred simultaneously with the election of four seats on the city council. These elections were nonpartisan, as are all municipal elections in Virginia Beach. The election saw incumbent mayor Bobby Dyer face challengers Jody Wagner, the former Virginia Secretary of Finance and Virginia State Treasurer, and Richard "RK" Kowalewitch, a local businessman. Dyer defeated Wagner and was reelected to a second term by a margin of 51.64% to her 43.83%. Bobby Dyer (politician)
Robert M. Dyer is an American politician currently serving as the Mayor of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Prior to being elected mayor, he served as a member of the city council for 14 years. Dyer has also been a physical therapist for over 40 years and a professor of government at his alma mater, Regent University. He won the November 2018 election for mayor despite being outraised by his opponent Ben Davenport nearly 5 to 1. Dyer ran for re-election for mayor in 2020. On June 9, 2020, Jody Wagner announced she would run for the seat; Dyer's previous opponent, City Councilman Aaron Rouse, ended his campaign on May 30, 2020. Bob McDonnell
Robert Francis McDonnell (born June 15, 1954) is an American attorney, businessman, politician, and former military officer who served as the 71st governor of Virginia from 2010 to 2014. His career ended after his corruption scandal and conviction, which was later unanimously overturned by the Supreme Court. A member of the Republican Party, McDonnell also served on the executive committee of the Republican Governors Association. McDonnell was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Reserve. William Douglas Sessoms Jr. (born c. 1954) is an American politician and bank officer who served as the mayor of Virginia Beach, Virginia from 2008 until his resignation in April, 2018. He was president and CEO of Towne Financial Services Group, a division of TowneBank of Hampton Roads, Virginia from 2011 to 2014. Jason Stuart Miyares (born February 11, 1976) is an American attorney and politician serving as the 48th Attorney General of Virginia since January 15, 2022. A Republican, he was elected a member of the Virginia House of Delegates on November 3, 2015, from the 82nd district which encompasses part of Virginia Beach.
