2020 Riga City Council Election
The 2020 Riga City Council election was held from 26 to 29 August 2020 to elect the 60 members of Riga City Council. The election was initially scheduled for 25 April 2020, and then rescheduled three times – once due to a court ruling and twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Latvia, to 2 May, 6 June, and 29 August. The council will be elected for nearly five years instead of the standard four, and the next election is scheduled to take place in 2025, at the same time as all other municipal elections in Latvia. Background In the 2017 Riga City Council election, the political alliance of Harmony (SKDS) and Honor to serve Riga (GKR) lost 7 seats but held on to their absolute majority with 32 seats out of 60. 2017 Latvian Municipal Elections
Municipal elections were held across Latvia on 3 June 2017. All 119 municipalities and republican cities of Latvia elected their city councils. In Riga the joint list of the Social Democratic Party "Harmony" and Honor to serve Riga won a majority. Dainis Turlais
Dainis Turlais (born 24 November 1950 in Madona, Latvian SSR) is a Latvian politician and former Soviet and Latvian officer. After being drafted into the Soviet Army in 1969, he continued his army service in the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany and became an officer, graduating from the Frunze Military Academy in 1985. From 1985 to 1989 he served as chief of the operative department of the 40th Army during the Soviet–Afghan War. He graduated from the K. E. Voroshilov Military Academy of the General Staff of the Soviet Armed Forces in 1990. He returned to Latvia after the collapse of the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt. Before Turlais started his political career, he was commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces (1992–1994), until he retired with the rank of colonel. National Power Unity
National Alliance Justice ( lv, Nacionālā Savienība Taisnīgums, NST), or simply Justice ( lv, Taisnīgums), previously known as National Power Union ( lv, Nacionālā Spēka Savienība, NSS) sometimes referred to as Union of National Force, is a far right ultranationalist political party in Latvia. United For Latvia
United for Latvia ( lv, Vienoti Latvijai) is a populist and economically liberal political party in Latvia. It was founded in 2011 in Rēzekne and in 2013 Ainārs Šlesers became party chairman. Šlesers has been dubbed one of the three "oligarchs" prominent in Latvian politics, and United for Latvia marks his return to electoral politics. He was previously leader of Latvia's First Party/Latvian Way and has served in several governments of Latvia including as Deputy Prime Minister in the government of Aigars Kalvītis and Minister of Transport in the second government of Ivars Godmanis, both of whom are party members. Unity ( lv, Vienotība, V) is a liberal-conservative political party in Latvia. It is a member of the New Unity alliance and is positioned on the centre-right on the political spectrum. For Latvia's Development ( lv, Latvijas attīstībai, abbr. LA) is a liberal political party in Latvia. It is positioned on the centre-right on the political spectrum. History The party was founded in 2013 by the former Prime Minister of Latvia Einars Repše. People's Servants for Latvia (, TKL), initially Motherland ( lv, Dzimtene), is a populist party in Latvia, founded in 2004. Its chairman was Viktors Kalnbērzs and its membership included currency exchange businessman Juris Žuravļovs. History The founding parties were the Social Democratic Welfare Party led by Žuravļovs, "For Freedom, Social Justice and Equal Rights" (Russian abbreviation "ЗаСССР", meaning "For USSR") and the Latvian Youth Party of Jānis Kuzins. The Union of Greens and Farmers ( lv, Zaļo un Zemnieku savienība, ZZS) is an agrarian political alliance in Latvia.
