2020 Qiaojia Earthquake
The 2020 Qiaojia earthquake () occurred in Yunnan, China, 42 km west of Zhaotong on May 18, 21:48 local time (2020-05-18 13:48 UTC). The moment magnitude 5.1 quake occurred at a depth of 10 km. Various buildings were damaged, and one house collapsed in Zhaoyang District. Four people were killed while 24 people were injured. Tectonic setting The lateral spreading of the thickened crust of the Tibetan Plateau, caused by the ongoing collision between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, has led to the presence of many active fault zones within the Sichuan-Yunnan region. The largest of these is the Xianshuihe fault system (XFS), a major left-lateral strike-slip structure. This fault system divides into two main strands, the Anninghe-Zemuhe and Daliangshan faults. This is a List of earthquakes in China, part of the series of lists of disasters in China. China has been the location of some of the most deadly earthquakes in history. The deadliest was the 1976 Tangshan earthquake with 300,000+ deaths. Earthquakes in the loess plateau where residents lived in yaodong caves tended to have big casualties, including the 1303 Hongdong and 1920 Haiyuan earthquakes. The most recent earthquake with a death toll of more than a thousand was the 2010 Yushu earthquake, which killed 2,698. Zhaotong City
Zhaotong () is a prefecture-level city located in the northeast corner of Yunnan province, China, bordering the provinces of Guizhou to the south and southeast and Sichuan to the northeast, north, and west. History Zhaotong has historic and cultural links to the Shu (Sichuan basin) region. Yi people consider Zhaotong to be their homeland (called Zizipuwu). Zhaotong was part of Zhuti County (朱提縣) during Han to Tang dynasties. Zhaotong belonged to the Nanzhao then Dali Kingdom until the Mongols destroyed the latter in the 13th century. Qiaojia County
Qiaojia County () is a county in the northeast of Yunnan province, China, bordering Sichuan province to the north and west. The population was 625,000 in 2019, 33,200 of whom belonged to ethnic minorities. It is both the southernmost and westernmost county-level division of Zhaotong City and located entirely on the right bank of the Jinsha River. The river valleys of Qiaojia are some of the lowest points in Yunnan province, at around 900 meters. The name of the county literally means 'City of industrious artisans'. The county is noted for being the site of the Baihetan Dam, located 40 km from the county seat. Construction of the dam required resettlement of 44,919 Qiaojia residents. In seismology, an isoseismal map is used to show lines of equally felt seismic intensity, generally measured on the Modified Mercalli scale. Such maps help to identify earthquake epicenters, particularly where no instrumental records exist, such as for historical earthquakes. Focal Mechanism
The focal mechanism of an earthquake describes the deformation in the source region that generates the seismic waves. In the case of a fault-related event it refers to the orientation of the fault plane that slipped and the slip vector and is also known as a fault-plane solution. Focal mechanisms are derived from a solution of the moment tensor for the earthquake, which itself is estimated by an analysis of observed seismic waveforms. The focal mechanism can be derived from observing the pattern of "first motions", that is, whether the first arriving P waves break up or down. This method was used before waveforms were recorded and analysed digitally and this method is still used for earthquakes too small for easy moment tensor solution.
