The 2020 Marshall Thundering Herd football team represented Marshall University in the 2020 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Thundering Herd played their home games at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia, and competed in the East Division of Conference USA (CUSA). They were led by eleventh-year head coach Doc Holliday. The game against Middle Tennessee marked the 50th anniversary of the crash of Southern Airways Flight 932, which took place on November 14, 1970, and killed 75 people. Previous season The Thundering Herd finished the 2019 regular season 8–5, 6–2 in CUSA which they tied for second in the East Division with Western Kentucky. Doc Holliday (American Football)
John "Doc" Holliday (born April 21, 1957) is an American football coach and former player. He was the head football coach at Marshall University from 2010 to 2020. Early life Holliday was born and raised in Hurricane, West Virginia, where he was a football star as well as a state champion wrestler at Hurricane High School (West Virginia), Hurricane High School. He graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education in 1979, then graduated with a master's degree in 1981 in Safety Management. Holliday was also a three-year letterwinner while playing linebacker at West Virginia. Coaching career First stint at West Virginia In 1979, Holliday became a graduate assistant for the West Virginia Mountaineers football team. Then in 1981, he became a part-time assistant until 1982. 2020 NCAA Division I FBS Football Rankings
Two human polls and a committee's selections comprise the 2020 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) football rankings, in addition to various publications' preseason polls. Unlike most sports, college football's governing body, the NCAA, does not bestow a national championship at the FBS level. Instead, that title is bestowed by one or more different polling agencies. There are two main weekly polls that begin in the preseason—the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll. One additional poll, the College Football Playoff (CFP) ranking, is usually released starting midway through the season. The CFP rankings determine who makes the four-team playoff that determines the College Football Playoff National Champion. 2020 UMass Minutemen Football Team
The 2020 UMass Minutemen football team represented the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the 2020 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Minutemen competed as an independent. They were led by second-year head coach Walt Bell. UMass originally announced on August 11, 2020, that they would not play football in the fall over concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
