2019–20 MJHL Season
The 2019–20 season was the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's (MJHL) 103rd year of operation. The league did not have a champion as the season was cancelled midway through the first round of the league playoffs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Season notes *The MJHL reduces the number of 20-year-old players permitted on each team's roster from eight to seven. *The Portage Terriers are selected to host the 2020 Centennial Cup, the 50th season the National Junior 'A' Championship is to be played. This championship is later cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. *The Winnipeg Blues are sold to 50 Below Sports & Entainment, Inc., which also owns the Winnipeg Ice of the Western Hockey League. Manitoba Junior Hockey League
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) is a Junior 'A' ice hockey league operating in the Canadian province of Manitoba and one of nine member leagues of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL). The MJHL consists of thirteen teams all based within the province of Manitoba, eight of which qualify for each year's playoffs. The playoff champion is awarded the Turnbull Cup, the Junior 'A' championship trophy for the province of Manitoba. The winner of the MJHL playoffs (Turnbull Cup) competes against the champion from Saskatchewan for the ANAVET Cup and a berth in the Centennial Cup (formerly known as the Royal Bank Cup). Winkler Flyers
The Winkler Flyers are a Manitoba Junior Hockey League team playing out of the Winkler Arena in Winkler, Manitoba, Canada. The Flyers entered the MJHL as an expansion team for the 1980-81 season and have won three Turnbull Cup Championships as Manitoba Junior 'A' Champions (1991, 1992, & 1998) as well as the ANAVET Cup in 1992. Vince Leah Trophy
The Kim Davis Trophy is an annual award given to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League during the regular season. The trophy is named after former MJHL commissioner Kim Davis. History The Rookie of the Year award was created in 1950. From 1967 to 1977, the award winner was presented the Gordon Petrie Memorial Trophy and from 1978 to 2022 was named the Vince Leah Trophy. Vince Leah was a sportswriter for ''The Winnipeg Tribune'' and the ''Winnipeg Free Press'', founded the Excelsior Hockey Club in 1934, which produced forty future professional hockey players and won thirteen provincial championships. Steve "Boomer" Hawrysh Award
The Steve "Boomer" Hawrysh Award is an ice hockey trophy that is presented annually to the Most Valuable Player of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) during the regular season. Steve “Boomer” Hawrysh reached a milestone in 1992 with 60 consecutive years in total hockey involvement in Dauphin. As a player, Hawrysh was on three Manitoba championship winners with the Dauphin intermediates. He began coaching in 1952 in Dauphin, Manitoba. Neepawa Natives
The Neepawa Titans are a Canadian Junior "A" ice hockey team from Neepawa, Manitoba. They are members of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), a part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League, and play home games at the Yellowhead Centre. History Neepawa Natives (1989–2021) Neepawa's MJHL team was founded in 1989 as the Neepawa Natives. The creation of the original team name was rooted in the early 1960s, with the then-named Neepawa Intermediates hockey team. In 1963, Ron Guinn and Cecil Pittman suggested the Neepawa Intermediates should create an actual team name for the Neepawa-based hockey club. A name that would connect to Neepawa (a Cree name meaning ''abundance'' or ''plenty'') was explored. The name 'Natives' was selected because Neepawa and Natives both start with the letter 'N', and were seven letters long, which led Pittman and Guinn to believe it was a good fit for the team. OCN Blizzard
The Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN) Blizzard are a junior "A" ice hockey team from The Pas, Manitoba, Canada. They are members of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, a part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League and Hockey Canada. The team is owned by two local businessmen and brothers Salman Safdar Dhillon and Usman Tahir Dhillon. Blizzard games are broadcast on local radio station CJAR 102.9 FM and can also be heard online at www.thepasonline.com. History The Blizzard were founded in 1996 by the Opaskwayak Cree Nation. The team was a year in the making with the Cree Nation's goal to enter the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). Selkirk Steelers
The Selkirk Steelers are a Junior "A" ice hockey team from Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada. They are members of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, a part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League and Hockey Canada. History Junior "A" hockey in Selkirk dates back to at least 1918, the founding of the MJHL. As one of the original members of the MJHL, the Selkirk Fishermen became the second Turnbull Cup, MJHL Champions by winning the 1920 playoffs. The Fishermen were crowned Western Junior "A" Champions and given the Abbott Cup. They moved on to the Memorial Cup for the national championship, but were defeated by the Toronto Canoe Club Paddlers. The 1920 Selkirk Fishermen were inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in the team category. In 1967, the Steelers joined the new Central Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Dauphin Kings
The Dauphin Kings are a Junior "A" ice hockey team from Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada. They are members of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), a part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) and Hockey Canada. The Kings were established in 1967 and play at the Credit Union Place. History 1967–68 In the fall of 1967 Dauphin, along with the Selkirk Steelers, Portage Terriers and Fort Garry Frontiersmen, started the Central Manitoba Junior Hockey League. 1968–69 After years of trying to secure an MJHL franchise Dauphin finally got its wish when the CMJHL and the MJHL merged for the 1968–69 season. The Kings opened the season with nine straight wins and remained undefeated for twelve games.
