This is a list of events in Scottish television from 2019. Events January *No events. February *12 February – Details of BBC Scotland's flagship news programme, '' The Nine'', are released. The 60-minute programme will air daily from 9.00pm, and has a fifteen strong team of presenters and reporters. It will be anchored by Rebecca Curran and Martin Geissler. *17 February – BBC Two Scotland closes in preparation for the launch of the BBC Scotland channel. Viewers in Scotland can still watch the national version of BBC Two, with regional content aired by BBC Two Scotland being transferred to the new channel. *24 February – At 7pm, the BBC Scotland channel launches. Television In Scotland
Television in Scotland mostly consists of UK-wide broadcasts, with regional variations at different times which are specific to Scotland. The BBC and ITV networks both began broadcasting in the country during the 1950s. There were further expansions in the early 1960s with the arrival of Grampian, Border and BBC2 television. The experience of commercial expansion of television services in Scotland since has been broadly similar to that in the UK generally. Terrestrial television is available through DTT platform Freeview along with various other channels. Cable services are available to limited parts of the country with Virgin Media, satellite television is provided by Sky and IPTV services are available with BT TV and TalkTalk TV. Only An Excuse?
''Only an Excuse?'' is an annual Scottish comedy sketch show that was broadcast on BBC One Scotland on Hogmanay from 1993 to 2020. It starred the actor and comedian Jonathan Watson and featured impressions of some of Scottish football's great characters such as Denis Law, Tommy Burns, Barry Ferguson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Frank McAvennie, Walter Smith and Graeme Souness, as well as caricatures of the "stereotypical" Old Firm fan. History ''Only an Excuse?'' was first broadcast as a one-off special on BBC Radio Scotland, prior to the 1987 Scottish Cup Final. It was a parody of the five-part BBC Scotland television documentary ''Only a Game?'', which had aired in Scotland prior to the 1986 World Cup Finals and comprehensively documented the history of Scottish football. The documentary was narrated by Scottish novelist William McIlvanney, whose distinctive voice was expertly mimicked by Jonathan Watson for the radio spoof. Molly And Mack
''Molly and Mack'' is a British children's television series that began airing on CBeebies in 2018. It ran for five seasons. The show airs on ABC Kids in Australia. Premise The show centres around an 11-year-old girl named Molly (played by Mimi Robertson) who spends the summer helping her 19-year-old brother Mack (played by Joshua Haynes) at a toy stall in The Big Hub, a community hall in the fictional Scottish town of Bridgetown. Two Doors Down (TV Series)
''Two Doors Down'' is a Scottish television sitcom, produced by BBC Studios. It was created by Simon Carlyle and Gregor Sharp, and stars Arabella Weir, Alex Norton, Doon Mackichan, Jonathan Watson and Elaine C. Smith as neighbours in a suburban street in Scotland. Following a one-off Hogmanay special broadcast nationwide on BBC One in late 2013, a full series was commissioned, and began airing on BBC Two in April 2016, with a second that November. A third series in 2018 (and a 2017 Christmas special) and a fourth in 2019 followed. A fifth series announced in mid-2020 was delayed until the following year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and broadcast in two halves in December 2021 and July/August 2022, with a sixth series shown that November and December, its Christmas special airing on BBC One. Scot Squad
''Scot Squad'' is a British television mockumentary series about a fictional Scottish police force, made in a fly on the wall style. The show first aired on 27 October 2014 on BBC One Scotland. The show has aired seven series, including specials, on the channel. As of series 8, which began on 5 January 2023, the show airs on BBC Scotland channel. The show is directed by Iain Davidson and is narrated by Joe Hullait. Former '' Absolutely'' star Jack Docherty plays the fictional force's police chief. In November 2016, a special crossover episode made for '' Children in Need'' featured several of the show's characters meeting characters from Scottish soap opera ''River City''. Shetland (TV Series)
''Shetland'' is a Scottish crime drama series made by ITV Studios for BBC Scotland and first broadcast on BBC One on 10 March 2013. Based upon the novels of Ann Cleeves and adapted for television by David Kane, who has remained a principal writer throughout, it stars Douglas Henshall as DI Jimmy Pérez. Also starring are Alison O'Donnell as DS Alison "Tosh" McIntosh, Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson and Mark Bonnar as Duncan Hunter. Lewis Howden, Erin Armstrong, Julie Graham and Anne Kidd are also principal members of the cast. Henshall won the 2016 BAFTA Scotland award for best actor and the series received the award for Best TV Drama. From Series 8 (2023), Ashley Jensen stars as DI Ruth Calder, replacing Henshall. ''Scotland Tonight'' is a Scottish news and current affairs programme, covering the two STV franchise areas of Northern and Central Scotland, produced by STV News. The programme is presented by ''STV News at Six'' Central anchor John MacKay on Mondays & Tuesdays and former Sky News Scotland correspondent Rona Dougall on Wednesdays & Thursday. Details The half-hour programme, which launched on Monday 24 October 2011, replacing the former STV weekly-political programme '' Politics Now''. The Nightshift (TV Series)
''The Nightshift'' is a Scottish overnight regional television programme broadcast on STV in Northern and Central Scotland. The overnight strand initially began as a local six-week pilot programme in the STV Central region on Thursday 22 April 2010, before launching a second edition for the STV North region on Tuesday 13 July 2010. STV News At Six
''STV News'' is a Scottish news service produced by STV. The news department produces two regional services covering STV's Channel 3 franchise areas of Northern and Central Scotland. STV's news programmes are produced from studios in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen with reporters also based at newsrooms in Dundee and Inverness and political correspondents based at Holyrood and Westminster. Freelance correspondents and camera crews are based on the Orkney and Shetland Isles, Wick and Fort William with a permanent Western Isles correspondent based in Stornoway. In addition to its daily bulletins and online services, STV News also produces the current affairs programme ''Scotland Tonight'' along with feature documentaries. STV Rugby
''STV Rugby'' is a Scottish regional television programme featuring highlights of Pro12 rugby matches involving Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors. The programme, produced by the STV News department in Glasgow, was first broadcast in the 2009/10 season after a deal with the Celtic League Association, Scottish Rugby and STV was reached, following the closure of Setanta Sports in the UK. Magners League rugby returned to STV for the 2010/11 season, under the new name of '' Sports Centre: Rugby''. ''An Là'' (''The Day'') is a Scottish Gaelic-language news programme broadcast on the Gaelic-language channel, BBC Alba. The programme, based at BBC Alba's newsroom in Inverness, began at 8pm on 22 September 2008 and provides a 30-minute bulletin of Scottish, British and international news for Gaelic speakers seven days a week. The Sunday night review programme, composed of highlights from the week's bulletins as well as material from ''Eòrpa'', called ''Seachd Là'', began at 6.30pm on 28 September 2008.
