2019 World Qualification Event
The 2019 World Qualification Event was held from January 18 to 23 at the Maniototo Curling International rink in Naseby, New Zealand. It was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, with the New Zealand women's team taking one host berth and the Australia men's team the other. South Korea and the Netherlands, the top two finishers in the men's division, qualified for the 2019 World Men's Curling Championship, while China and Finland qualified for the 2019 World Women's Curling Championship as the top two finishers in the women's division. Naseby, New Zealand
Naseby is a small town, formerly a borough, in the Maniototo area of Central Otago, New Zealand. It is named after a village in Northamptonshire, England. Previous names of the township were Parker's, Hogburn and Mt Ida. The town catch phrase is "2000 feet above worry level" indicating its altitude. Naseby is 395 km (5 hours drive) from Christchurch and 143 km (1 hour 45 minutes drive) from Dunedin. An important township during the gold rush of the 1860s, Gold was discovered in the Hogburn in 1863. Much of the town has been preserved from this time and has something of the air of a working museum. At its peak, the population of the town was around 4,000 miners. Eighteen stores, 14 hotels, two butchers and a hospital had also been built to service the miners. In 1898, a railway line was constructed 12 km away in Ranfurly and as a result services gradually moved away from Naseby to Ranfurly. Jay Merchant (born 16 May 1982) is an Australian curler and curling coach originally from Canada. Personal life Merchant was born and grew up in Coronation, Alberta, Canada. His father, Archie curled in national oilman's competitions and his mom and older brother curled as well. After highschool, Merchant attended the University of Lethbridge where he studied for a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He spent the majority of his time working in oil and gas as a labourer and then became an executive with M&N Construction in between his studies. He was a member of then Member of Parliament Rick Casson's steering committee and curled out of the Lethbridge Curling Club. He played juniors in Alberta and made it to provincials a number of times. Dean Hewitt (born 9 November 1994) is an Australian curler from Melbourne. At the 2021 Olympic Curling Qualification Event in December 2021 Hewitt and his teammate Tahli Gill made history, when they won qualification to the mixed doubles tournament at the 2022 Winter Olympics. The 2018 Pacific-Asia Curling Championships were held from November 3 to 10 at the Gangneung Curling Centre in Gangneung, South Korea.
