The 58th Venice Biennale was an international contemporary art exhibition held between May and November 2019. The Venice Biennale takes place biennially in Venice, Italy. Artistic director Ralph Rugoff curated its central exhibition, ''May You Live in Interesting Times'', and 90 countries contributed national pavilions. Ghana Freedom
''Ghana Freedom'' was a Ghanaian art exhibition at the 2019 Venice Biennale, an international contemporary art biennial in which countries represent themselves through self-organizing national pavilions. The country's debut pavilion, also known as the Ghana pavilion, was highly anticipated and named a highlight of the overall Biennale by multiple journalists. The six participating artists Felicia Abban, John Akomfrah, El Anatsui, Selasi Awusi Sosu, Ibrahim Mahama, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakyerepresented a range of artist age, gender, locations, and prestige, selected by curator Nana Oforiatta Ayim. Sun & Sea (Marina)
''Sun & Sea (Marina)'' is an opera composed by with a libretto by Vaiva Grainytė and directed by , and presented as part of the 2019 Venice Biennale in a project curated by Lucia Pietroiusti. It won the festival's top award, the Golden Lion. The opera premiered in 2017 at the Lithuanian National Gallery of Art and was translated into English for the Biennale, where it served as Lithuania's national participation. It is set on a faux beach indoors, in which 24 performers partake in commonplace beach activities while singing about the causes and physical impacts of climate change in solo arias and group harmonies. The performance was a popular attraction with long wait lines at the Biennale. Martine Gutierrez
Martine Gutierrez (born 1989) is an American visual and performance artist. Gutierrez is known for creating artworks that interrogate how identity is formed, expressed, and perceived. The artist has created music videos, billboard campaigns, episodic films, photographs, live performance artworks, and a satirical fashion magazine investigating identity as both a social construct and an authentic expression of self. Gutierrez's artworks have been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide and were exhibited in the Central Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale. Shilpa Gupta
Shilpa Gupta (born 1976) is a contemporary Indian artist, she lives and works in Mumbai, India where she has studied sculpture at the Sir J. J. Avery Singer
Avery Singer (born 1987) is an American artist known for creating digitally assisted paintings created through 3D modeling software and computer-controlled airbrushing. Early life and education Singer was born to artists Janet Kusmierski and Greg Singer. She graduated from Cooper Union in 2010. She has since been working out of studios in the Bronx and later in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Work In her work, Singer uses architectural, automation and other modelling software (and an animation specialist) to create the backdrop before then airbrushing layers of images using a computer-controlled printer that was designed to transfer logos on to trucks and aeroplanes. Henry Taylor (artist)
Henry Taylor (born 1958) is an American artist and painter who lives and works in Los Angeles, California. He is best known for his acrylic paintings, mixed media sculptures, and installations. Life Henry Taylor was born the youngest of eight brothers and sisters, which earned him the nickname "Henry VIII", in Ventura, California, to a father who was employed by the U.S. government as a commercial painter and is listed as a painter on Henry's birth certificate. Raised in Oxnard, California, Henry took art classes at Oxnard College under James Jarvaise, who became an ongoing mentor. His brother, Randy, was a founding member of the Ventura County chapter of the Black Panthers. After 10 years of working as a psychiatric technician at Camarillo State Mental Hospital, Taylor retired in 1997. Nicole Eisenman
Nicole Eisenman (born 1965) is French-born American artist known for her oil paintings and sculptures. She has been awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship (1996), the Carnegie Prize (2013), and has thrice been included in the Whitney Biennial (1995, 2012, 2019). Njideka Akunyili Crosby (born 1983) is a Nigerian-born visual artist working in Los Angeles, California. Through her art Akunyili Crosby "negotiates the cultural terrain between her adopted home in America and her native Nigeria, creating collage and photo transfer-based paintings that expose the challenges of occupying these two worlds".
