2019 UConn Huskies Men's Soccer Team
The UConn Huskies men's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team of the University of Connecticut. The team is a member of the Big East Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). History Connecticut soccer existed prior to 1969, but was not considered a major sport and did not even have a real stadium. However, in 1969, Joe Morrone was hired as head coach, and made significant changes that would make the Huskies a premiere program. He started by building Connecticut Soccer Stadium, which now bears his name as Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Eventually, in Morrone's words, the team became "the Notre Dame of college soccer". Morrone would ultimately coach the team until he retired in 1994. In 1981, the Huskies won their first NCAA-sanctioned College Cup, defeating Alabama A&M 2–1 in overtime at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California. Chris Gbandi
Chris Gbandi (born April 7, 1979) is a retired Liberian footballer who is currently the head coach of the UConn Huskies men's soccer team. Career College Gbandi played college soccer at the University of Connecticut, where he was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy in 1999 and 2001, and a winner in 2000 (he was named First Team All-American during his last two years in college). Professional Gbandi was drafted with the first overall pick of the 2002 MLS SuperDraft by Dallas Burn, but missed all of the 2002 season while rehabilitating a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). He returned in the 2003 season, where he registered one goal and two assists after playing 22 games in a disappointing campaign for the Burn. Gbandi played in another 23 games in 2004. MLS Rookie Of The Year Award
The MLS Young Player of the Year Award (known as the Rookie of the Year Award from 1996 to 2019) is an annual award given to the top player in Major League Soccer under the age of 22. The award was initially awarded to a rookie, or a player who no prior professional experience, usually to players that had previously played in MLS youth team academies or played college soccer. Ray Reid
Raymond Michael "Ray" Reid (born May 8, 1960 in Brentwood, New York) is a retired American college soccer coach. He was head coach at the University of Connecticut Huskies men's soccer team for 24 years. He has led UConn to one NCAA Division I national championship, eight Big East regular season championships and four Big East tournament championships. Before coming to UConn, he was the head coach at Southern Connecticut State University, leading the team to three NCAA Division II national championships in eight seasons. John Squires (soccer)
John Young Squires (May 3, 1912 – July 25, 2006) was an American men's soccer coach. He coached the Connecticut Huskies between 1937 and 1941 and from 1946 to 1968. The 1943–1945 seasons were canceled due to World War II so the only season during that time that the Huskies played without Squires was 1942, when they were coached by Carl Fischer. Joe Morrone took over for Squires beginning in 1969. He was born May 3, 1912, in Norwalk, Connecticut, and he often participated in the Norwalk YMCA. In 1934, Squires got a scholarship at the University of Geneva in Geneva, Switzerland. He continued to study physical education there. O'Brian White
O'Brian White (born 14 December 1985, in Ocho Rios) is a Jamaican former footballer who played as a forward. Career Youth and college White grew up in Jamaica before moving to Scarborough, Ontario in 2002 to live with his mother. He began playing football while attending Lester B. Pearson Collegiate Institute, where he was named the Most Valuable Player of the squad in 2004 and 2005. White played college soccer at the University of Connecticut. The Hermann Trophy is awarded annually by the Missouri Athletic Club to the United States's top men's and women's college soccer players. Tony Cascio (born March 28, 1990) is an American soccer player. Career College and Amateur Tony begin his soccer career playing for Hamilton High School in his home town of Chandler, Arizona. Cascio played college soccer at the University of Connecticut between 2008 and 2011. Andrew Jean-Baptiste (born 16 June 1992) is a professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Canadian club Valour FC. Born in the United States, he represents the Haiti national team. Carlos Alvarez (born November 12, 1990) is an American soccer coach and former professional player who played as a midfielder. As of 2022, he works as a youth coach for San Diego Surf SC. Sergio Akeen Campbell (born 16 January 1992) is a Jamaican international footballer who plays as a defender for Stumptown Athletic in the National Independent Soccer Association.
