2019 Temple Owls Football Team
The 2019 Temple Owls football team represented Temple University during the 2019 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Owls were led by first-year head coach Rod Carey and played their home games at Lincoln Financial Field, competing as a member of the East Division of the American Athletic Conference (AAC). Previous season The Owls finished the 2018 season 8–5, 7–1 in AAC play to finish in second place in the East Division. They were invited to the Independence Bowl where they were defeated by Duke. Following the season, Geoff Collins left the team to become the head coach at Georgia Tech. Collins was eventually replaced by Northern Illinois head coach Rod Carey. Rod Carey
Roderick Charles Carey (born July 24, 1971) is an American football coach and former player. He served as the head football coach at Northern Illinois University from 2012 to 2018 and Temple University from 2019 to 2021. Early years Carey was born in Madison, Wisconsin and played college football as a center at Indiana University Bloomington from 1990 to 1993. Zachary John Mesday (born October 25, 1994) is an American football rookie free agent defensive end/linebacker from Hamilton Township, Mercer County, New Jersey who played college football for Temple University, where he originally walked-on and eventually earned a sixth year of eligibility and scholarship as a graduate student. Outland Trophy
The Outland Trophy is awarded to the best college football interior lineman in the United States as adjudged by the Football Writers Association of America. It is named after John H. Outland. One of only a few players ever to be named an All-American at two positions, Outland garnered consensus All-America honors in 1898 as a tackle and consensus honors as a halfback in 1899. Outland had always contended that football tackles and guards deserved greater recognition and conceived the Outland Trophy as a means of providing this recognition. Chapelle Russell (born January 20, 1997) is an American football linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Temple. College career Russell verbally committed to Temple during his senior year at Lakewood High School. He endured ACL surgery during his redshirt freshman year at Temple but was named Temple's Male Comeback Player of the Year in 2018. The Butkus Award, instituted in 1985 by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, is given annually to the top linebackers at the high school, collegiate and professional levels of football.
