2019 Tampa Mayoral Election
An election for Mayor of Tampa was held on March 5, 2019. The election is officially nonpartisan, and the winner is elected to a four-year term. Incumbent mayor Bob Buckhorn is not eligible to run for a third term. Buckhorn was first elected in 2011 (winning in the second round with 62.86% of the vote) and reelected unopposed in 2015. Jane Castor and David Straz headed off into a runoff election on April 23, 2019, as no candidate received the majority fifty percent. Castor defeated Straz in the runoff election, becoming mayor-elect of Tampa. 2019 United States Mayoral Elections
The 2019 United States elections were held, in large part, on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. This off-year election included gubernatorial elections in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi; regularly-scheduled state legislative elections in Louisiana, Mississippi, Virginia, and New Jersey; and special elections for seats in various state legislatures. Numerous citizen initiatives, mayoral races, and a variety of other local elections also occurred. Three special elections to the United States House of Representatives also took place in 2019 as a result of vacancies. Democrats regained the governorship of Kentucky and held the office in Louisiana, despite strong campaign efforts by President Donald Trump for the Republican candidates. Sam Gibbons
Sam Melville Gibbons (January 20, 1920 – October 10, 2012) was an American politician from the U.S. state, state of Florida, who served in the Florida State House of Representatives, Florida State Senate, and the U.S. House of Representatives. He represented the city of Tampa, Florida, Tampa in Congress for over 30 years. Early life and education Gibbons was born in Tampa, Florida on January 20, 1920. He went to Roosevelt Elementary School (Tampa, Florida), Roosevelt Elementary School when he was a young child. The current-day auditorium is named after him. He graduated from Henry B. Plant High School, H. B. Plant High School, where he was part of JROTC, and then went on to the University of Florida. After military service during World War II, Gibbons attended the Fredric G. Edwin "Ed" Aubron Narain (born September 8, 1976) is an American Democratic politician who served as a member of the Florida House of Representatives, representing the 61st District, which includes West and East Tampa, Progress Village, Sulphur Springs and the University parts of Tampa in Central and Northern Hillsborough County, from 2014-2016. Jane Castor
Jane Castor (born December 7, 1960) is an American politician and former police chief serving as the 59th mayor of Tampa, Florida. She was the first woman and first openly gay person to serve as Chief of Police of the Tampa Police Department from 2009 to 2015 and the first openly gay person to be elected Mayor of Tampa. Early life and education Castor attended Chamberlain High School in Tampa and graduated in 1977. Castor attended the University of Tampa, where she played volleyball and basketball while earning a degree in criminology.
