2019 MEA Rugby League Championship
The 2019 Middle East-Africa Rugby League Championship was the second MEA Rugby League Championship, held in October 2019 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, Nigeria. The competition saw the international debut of Cameroon, Ghana and Nigeria, while Morocco played for the first time since the last MEA Championship, eight years previously. Rugby league in Africa refers to the involvement of the sport of rugby league in the African continent. As of 2020, rugby league has seen activity in countries such as Burundi, Cameroon, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and South African Rugby League, South Africa. History Initial establishment in South Africa Rugby league in Africa was first conceptualised in South Africa in the 1950s. In 1953, Ludwig Japhet headed a committee which was solely formed for the purpose of promoting the sport in the country. Ludwig had a meeting with English administrator Bill Fallowfield to discuss the possibility of developing the game in South Africa. In 1957, games were organised against Great Britain and French national teams in Benoni, Durban, and East London for the purpose of promoting the sport. French Rugby League Federation
The French Rugby League Federation (french: Fédération Française de Rugby à XIII (FFR)) is the governing body for the sport of rugby league football in France. The Federation was formed during 1934 and since then has organised and governed the French rugby league championship, the Lord Derby Cup and all of the clubs that are contained within those organisations. The FFR also controls the France national rugby league team organizing fixtures that they compete in, they also have a major voting position in the Rugby League International Federation where they help organise many aspects of rugby league worldwide. Sadiq Adebiyi (born 8 January 1997) is a Nigerian professional rugby league footballer who plays as a or for the Keighley Cougars in the Championship and Nigeria at international level. Adebiyi played for London Broncos between 2015 and 2021 with loan spells at Hemel Stags, Oxford and London Skolars in League 1, and Oldham and the Sheffield Eagles in the Championship. Morocco National Rugby League Team
The Morocco national rugby league team has been participating in international competition since 1995. Many players for the Moroccan team are drawn from the French competition. Morocco has participated in the World Sevens (1995), Superleague World Nines (1996), Emerging Nations Tournament (1995, 2000) and Mediterranean Cup (since 2003) competitions.
