2018–19 United States National Rugby Sevens Team Season
The United States national rugby sevens team got off to a strong start in the 2018–19 World Rugby Sevens Series. The team reached the finals in Dubai, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, the first time the U.S. had reached four consecutive finals and was ranked joint first in the overall Series after the first four legs. In the fifth leg, the U.S. won beating Samoa 27–0. This was the U.S.’s second straight USA Sevens win, giving them sole possession of first place in the Sevens World Series. The U.S. remained in first place for several more tournaments, but consecutive semifinal losses to Fiji in the last two tournaments in London and Paris meant that Fiji won the Series with the U.S. finishing second. The U.S. overall had its best season ever — the second-place finish beating their previous best of fifth. United States National Rugby Sevens Team
The United States national rugby sevens team competes in international rugby sevens competitions. The national sevens team is organized by USA Rugby, and the team has been led by Head Coach Mike Friday since 2014. The main competition the team plays in every year is the World Rugby Sevens Series, a series of ten tournaments played around the globe from December to June that includes the USA Sevens tournament every spring. The Eagles have been a core team in the World Series and finished in the top twelve each season since 2008–09. The Eagles' best season in the Sevens Series has been a second-place finish in the 2018–19 Series. The best result in a single Sevens tournament was first place, which they have accomplished three times — winning the 2015 London Sevens and the 2018 and 2019 USA Sevens. Stephen Tomasin (born September 25, 1994) is an American rugby union player who plays for the United States national rugby sevens team in the World Rugby Sevens Series. During his high school years, Tomasin played American football as a running back. In his senior year at Cardinal Newman High School, he was voted North Bay League Offensive MVP. Michael John "Mike" Friday (born April 25, 1972) has been the head coach of the United States national rugby sevens team since summer 2014. Friday was appointed head coach after the U.S. coach for the 2013–14 season, Matt Hawkins, was asked to resign following the U.S. team's poor performance in the 2013–14 IRB Sevens World Series, 2013–14 World Rugby Sevens Series, IRB Sevens World Series. Maceo Brown (born September 1, 1995) is an American rugby union player. He plays for the United States national rugby sevens team as a center and as a forward. Brown debuted for the U.S. national team at the 2018 Dubai Sevens. He played regularly as a substitute for the U.S. throughout the 2018–19 season – including at the 2019 USA Sevens tournament, which the U.S. won – in the absence of squad regular Maka Unufe, who was out for the season. Matai Leuta
Matai Leuta (born July 20, 1990) is an American rugby union player who currently plays for the San Diego Legion in Major League Rugby (MLR). Matai has gained international honors playing for the United States National Rugby Sevens Team. Matai has had an extensive rugby sevens career, playing in 215 HSBC World Sevens Series matches in 44 tournaments, and scoring 31 tries. Martin Iosefo (born January 13, 1990) is an American rugby union player who previously played several seasons with the United States national rugby sevens team. He now plays for the Seattle Seawolves in Major League Rugby (MLR). Early life Iosefo grew up in Wahiawa on the island of Oahu in Hawaii where he learned to play rugby. Folau Niua (born January 27, 1985) is an American rugby union former player. He played fly-half for the United States national rugby sevens team from 2011 to 2022, and holds the U.S. record for most tournament appearances with over 65 caps. Kevon Williams (born June 7, 1991) is an American rugby player who plays for the United States national rugby sevens team on the World Rugby Sevens Series. Williams is originally from Houston, Texas. He attended Westbury High School and college at the New Mexico Highlands. He also played American football as a wide receiver with the New Mexico Highlands until 2012. He picked up rugby in 2013. Danny Barrett (born March 23, 1990) is an American rugby player who plays as a forward. He previously played for the U.S. national rugby team, and also played for the U.S. national rugby sevens team.
