2018 VFL Women's Season
The 2018 VFL Women's season was the third season of the VFL Women's (VFLW). The season commenced on 5 May and concluded with the Grand Final on 23 September 2018. The competition was contested by thirteen clubs. Clubs Significant overhaul and changes were made to composition of the competition ahead of the 2018 season. With the establishment of the national AFL Women's competition in 2017, the league sought to affiliate clubs more closely to existing AFL/AFLW clubs. Consequently five foundation clubs departed; leaving Darebin, Melbourne University and VU Western Spurs (who were taken over by and renamed the Western Bulldogs to align with the AFL club) as the remaining clubs. Darcy Vescio
Darcy Vescio (born 3 August 1993) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Carlton Football Club in the AFL Women's competition. As a heavily marketed marquee player, Vescio has been referred to as a "household name" in Australia by ESPN. Junior and state league football Vescio began playing football with their brother at the age of five. Vescio was a participant in the Auskick program. They stopped playing competitive football at the age of fourteen, when they were no longer allowed to play with the youth boys team. Vescio started playing again at the age of eighteen, when they moved to Melbourne from their home town of Wangaratta and joined the Darebin Falcons in the Victorian Women's Football League (VWFL). Melbourne University Football Club
Melbourne University Football Club, often known simply as University, is an Australian rules football club based at the University of Melbourne. The club fields two teams, known as the "Blacks" and "Blues", who both compete in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) in the William Buck Premier Division. The club achieved prominence by being a member of Victoria's elite competition in the early 20th century, the Victorian Football League (VFL; now AFL), between 1908 and 1914, departing after its strict policy of amateurism left it uncompetitive in an increasingly professional league. It is one of only three clubs to leave the competition in its entire history. Kate Gillespie-Jones
Katherine Gillespie-Jones (born 26 April 1991) is an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton and North Melbourne in the AFL Women's (AFLW). AFLW career Doctor Gillespie-Jones was drafted by Carlton with the club's second selection and the fourteenth overall in the 2016 AFL Women's draft. She made her debut in round 1, 2017, in the club and the league's inaugural match at Ikon Park against . In May 2018, Gillespie-Jones signed with expansion club, North Melbourne, to play with the club in the 2019 AFLW season. Rebecca Goring
Rebecca Goring (born 9 June 1994) is an Australian rules footballer who played for the Geelong Football Club in the AFL Women's competition (AFLW). AFL Women's career Goring was signed by Geelong prior to the 2018 AFL Women's draft under the league's expansion club signing rules. She had previously played for and captained Geelong's side in the lower-tier VFL Women's competition in 2017 and 2018. She made her AFLW debut in a one-point win over at GMHBA Stadium in the opening match of the 2019 season. Penny Cula-Reid
Penny Cula-Reid (born 2 February 1988) is an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the AFL Women's competition. Prior to being signed for the national competition, she was a multiple premiership player in the Victorian Women's Football League and club captain for the St Kilda Sharks; she also represented Victoria at the under 19 national championships. She has also played cricket in the Victorian second XI and gridiron with the Victorian Maidens in the Lingerie Football League. Jayde Van Dyk
Jayde Van Dyk (born 28 March 1996) is an Australian rules footballer playing for St Kilda in the AFL Women's (AFLW). A defender who played with Hawthorn in the VFL Women's (VFLW), she was drafted by Carlton with the twenty-first selection in the 2018 AFLW draft. Van Dyk debuted in the opening round of the 2019 season and played in the 2019 AFL Women's Grand Final. Early career Van Dyk played for her local club in Chirnside Park, Victoria. Docklands Stadium, also currently known by naming rights sponsorship as Marvel Stadium, is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment stadium in the Docklands area of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Essendon Football Club
The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition.
