2018 Queen's Birthday Honours (Australia)
The 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for Australia were announced on 11 June 2018 by the Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove. The Birthday Honours were appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms of Queen Elizabeth II to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of those countries. The Birthday Honours are awarded as part of the Queen's Official Birthday celebrations during the month of June. Birthday Honours
The Birthday Honours, in some Commonwealth realms, mark the reigning British monarch's official birthday by granting various individuals appointment into national or dynastic orders or the award of decorations and medals. The honours are presented by the monarch or a viceregal representative. The Birthday Honours are one of two annual honours lists, along with the New Year Honours. All royal honours are published in the relevant gazette. History Honours have been awarded with few exceptions on the sovereign's birthday since at least 1860, during the reign of Queen Victoria. There was no Birthday Honours list issued in 1876, which brought "a good deal of disappointment" and even rebuke for the Ministry of Defence. San Thang
Thang Hoa San ( vi, Thang Hoa Sân, zh, 湯華燊; born 28 August 1954) is an Australian chemist of Chinese-Vietnamese background. Thang was born in Saigon in 1954 to Chinese parents who migrated to Vietnam in the 1930s. He completed his Bachelor of Science at Saigon University in 1976, and worked as a chemist at SINCO, a sewing machine manufacturer. In 1979, Thang left Vietnam as a refugee from the Vietnam War, and spent five months in a refugee camp in Malaysia before arriving in Brisbane, Australia later in the year. He enrolled at Griffith University where he completed an Honours degree in chemistry and a PhD in organic chemistry. In 1986, Thang joined the CSIRO, the Australian government's scientific agency. In 1987, he left to join ICI Australia, but returned to CSIRO in 1990. John Kerin
John Charles Kerin (born 21 November 1937) is an Australian economist and former Labor Party politician who served in the House of Representatives from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1993. He held a number of senior ministerial roles in both the Hawke and Keating Governments, including six months as Treasurer of Australia and eight years as Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, holding the latter role for the longest period in Australian history. Jenny Margaret Kee, (born 24 January 1947) is an Australian fashion designer. Early life Kee was born on 24 January 1947 in Bondi, New South Wales to a Chinese father and a sixth-generation Australian mother of Italian-English descent. Kee's great-grandparents had migrated from Guangdong, China, to Cooktown, Queensland during the 1870s gold rush. Emma Johnston
Emma Letitia Johnston (born 1973) is the Dean of Science at the University of New South Wales and President of Science & Technology Australia. She is an authority in marine ecology and a former Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at UNSW. Johnston is head of the Applied Marine and Estuarine Ecology Lab at UNSW and has led major projects for industry, government, the Australian Research Council and the Australian Antarctic Science Program. Natalie Jeremijenko (born 1966) is an artist and engineer whose background includes studies in biochemistry, physics, neuroscience and precision engineering. Linda Jackson (designer)
Linda Jackson (born 15 September 1950) is a pioneer Australian fashion designer, fashion retailer and artist. Biography Jackson was born in Melbourne bay side suburb of Beaumaris, Victoria, Beaumaris. Her parents were ballroom dancers and encouraged her creative instincts. She studied fashion and design at the Emily McPherson College (now part of RMIT University, RMIT), and photography in Melbourne. In 1966 she left to travel in Asia and Europe. She regarded these travels as her "university of life". She travelled through Papua New Guinea, Asia and onto Europe and England. Jackson returned to Sydney in 1972 after working as a dressmaker in London. Kurt Fearnley
Kurt Harry Fearnley, (born 23 March 1981) is an Australian wheelchair racer, who has won gold medals at the Paralympic Games and 'crawled' the Kokoda Track. He has a congenital disorder called sacral agenesis which prevented fetal development of certain parts of his lower spine and all of his sacrum. In Paralympic events he is classified in the T54 classification. He focuses on long and middle-distance wheelchair races, and has also won medals in sprint relays. He participated in the 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Paralympic Games, finishing his Paralympic Games career with thirteen medals (three gold, seven silver and three bronze). Joan Evans (charity Worker)
Sister Joan Kyrle Evans, PBVM, is a retired Australian religious sister born in 1931 who was based in the Klong Toei slums in Bangkok, Thailand. She is a member of the Western Australian Congregation of Presentation Sisters. Sister Joan is a charity activist, who helps the needy youth and families in the slums of the Thai capital. Each fortnight, Sister Joan's project supports around 100 babies with deliveries of powdered milk. Prior to her work in Thailand, Sister Joan taught mathematics and geography in schools throughout Western Australia. Postings included Iona Presentation College in the Perth suburb of Mosman Park, and Stella Maris Presentation College in the midwestern town of Geraldton. Robin Creyke
Robin Creyke is an Emeritus Professor of law in Australia. She graduated from the University of Western Australia (1966) and earned her Master of Laws from Australian National University (1991). Creyke joined the faculty of the College of Law at the Australian National University in 1985 and became a professor (specifically military law) in 2002.
