2018 Oakland Athletics Season
The 2018 Oakland Athletics season was the 118th season for the Oakland Athletics franchise, all as members of the American League, and their golden jubilee of franchise in Oakland (all at Oakland Coliseum). The A's were managed by Bob Melvin in his eighth year as manager of the A's. They played their home games at Oakland Coliseum as members of Major League Baseball's American League West Division. The A's began the season on March 29 against the Los Angeles Angels and finished the season on September 30 against the Angels as well. On September 24, they clinched their first playoff berth since 2014. They went on to lose to the New York Yankees in the Wild Card Game, 7–2. American League West
The American League West is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. The division has five teams as of the 2013 season, but had four teams from 1994 to 2012, and had as many as seven teams before the 1994 realignment. Although its teams currently only reside along the West Coast of the United States, west coast and in Texas, historically the division has had teams as far east as Chicago. From 1998 (when the NL West expanded to five teams) to 2012, the AL West was the only MLB division with four teams. The current champion of this division is the Houston Astros. In 2013, the Houston Astros went from the National League Central to the AL West. That move gives all six MLB divisions an equal five teams and both leagues an equal 15 teams each. The American League of Professional Baseball Clubs, known simply as the American League (AL), is one of two leagues that make up Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States and Canada. It developed from the Western League, a minor league based in the Great Lakes states, which eventually aspired to major league status. It is sometimes called the Junior Circuit because it claimed Major League status for the 1901 season, 25 years after the formation of the National League (the "Senior Circuit"). Tyler Skaggs
Tyler Wayne Skaggs (July 13, 1991July 1, 2019) was an American left-handed professional baseball starting pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels from 2012 until his death in 2019. A native of Woodland Hills, California, and a graduate of Santa Monica High School, Skaggs was a supplemental first-round selection for the Angels in the 2009 Major League Baseball draft. He was traded to the Diamondbacks the following year as part of an exchange for pitcher Dan Haren and rose through Arizona's farm system. Noé Ramirez (baseball)
Noé Ramirez (born December 22, 1989) is an American professional baseball pitcher who is currently a free agent. He previously in MLB played for the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Red Sox selected Ramirez in the fourth round of the 2011 draft and he made his MLB debut in 2015. Amateur career After graduating from Alhambra High School, Ramirez enrolled at California State University, Fullerton. David Christopher Hatcher (born January 12, 1985) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Florida/Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Oakland Athletics. Career Amateur Hatcher attended Kinston High School in Kinston, North Carolina, where he played catcher and also pitched. After graduation, he was recruited to play baseball for the University of North Carolina Wilmington. As a freshman, he hit .315 in 29 games while also pitching two innings. As a sophomore, he hit .300 with seven homers and 39 RBI and as a junior he hit .348 with seven homers and 55 RBI. The 2018 Los Angeles Angels season was the 58th season of the Angels franchise and the 53rd in Anaheim (all of them at Angel Stadium). Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease (MND) or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurodegenerative disease that results in the progressive loss of motor neurons that control voluntary muscles. ALS is the most common type of motor neuron diseases. Early symptoms of ALS include stiff muscles, muscle twitches, and gradual increasing weakness and muscle wasting. ''Limb-onset ALS'' begins with weakness in the arms or legs, while ''bulbar-onset ALS'' begins with difficulty speaking or swallowing. Half of the people with ALS develop at least mild difficulties with thinking and behavior, and about 15% develop frontotemporal dementia. Most people experience pain. Max William Schrock (born October 12, 1994) is an American professional baseball second baseman in the San Diego Padres organization. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds. Career Amateur Schrock attended Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. The 2018 American League Wild Card Game was a play-in game during Major League Baseball's (MLB) 2018 postseason contested between the American League's (AL) two wild card teams, the New York Yankees and the Oakland Athletics. The game took place at Yankee Stadium on October 3, starting at 8:08 pm EDT. The Yankees won, 7–2, and advanced to face the Boston Red Sox in the American League Division Series.
