Inuvik, Northwest Territories
Inuvik (''place of man'') is the only town in the Inuvik Region, and the third largest community in Canada's Northwest Territories. Located in what is sometimes called the Beaufort Delta Region, it serves as its administrative and service centre and is home to federal, territorial, and Indigenous government offices, along with the regional hospital and airport. Inuvik is located on the northern edge of the Taiga, boreal forest, just before it begins to transition to tundra, and along the east side of the enormous Mackenzie River delta. The town lies on the border between the Gwich'in Tribal Council, Gwich'in Settlement Region and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. 2019 Northwest Territories Scotties Tournament Of Hearts
The 2019 Northwest Territories Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the territorial women's curling championship for Northwest Territories, was held January 10–11 at the Yellowknife Curling Centre in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Only two teams entered the event, the defending champion Kerry Galusha rink from Yellowknife and the 2019 territorial junior champion Tyanna Bain rink from Inuvik. As such, the event was a best-of-five series. Galusha easily beat the Bain rink in three games. Team Galusha represented Northwest Territories at the 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Canada's national women's curling championship. 2018 Scotties Tournament Of Hearts
The 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Canada's national women's curling championship, was held from January 27–February 4, 2018 at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton, British Columbia. The winning team represented Canada at the 2018 Ford World Women's Curling Championship held from March 17–25 at the Memorial Gardens in North Bay, Ontario. The 2018 tournament was the first to use a new 16-team format, featuring representation by all fourteen member associations of Curling Canada, the second-place team from the 2017 tournament (as champion Rachel Homan declined to participate due to her qualification for the 2018 Winter Olympics), and a new wildcard team. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. Fred Koe
Fred Koe (born March 8, 1947) is a former territorial level politician and Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest territories from 1991 to 1995. He was born in Aklavik. Koe is the son of Jim Koe, who was the chief of the Aklavik Indian Band. He grew up in Aklavik and would later move to Inuvik. At the age of 11, he was a victim of the Canadian Indian residential school system, and was forced to go school in Inuvik, away from his family. Koe ran for a seat in the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election. He won the Inuvik electoral district defeating future Commissioner Glenna Hansen. Koe was defeated one term later defending his incumbency. He was defeated by candidate Floyd Roland in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election. Shona Barbour
Shona Barbour (born July 4, 1979) is a Canadian curler from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. She currently coaches the Kerry Galusha rink out of the Yellowknife Curling Centre in Yellowknife. Career Juniors Barbour made her first national debut at the 1995 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, playing second stones for Tara Hamer. The team ended up finishing round robin with a 3–8 record. In 1996 Barbour returned to the juniors once more, this time throwing third stones for Kerry Koe. The team finished round robin with a 5–7 record. Barbour made her final junior appearance in 1998, playing third for Koe, and again failed to make the playoffs, finishing round robin with a 2–10 record. 2005–2009 It was not until 2005 that Barbour return to national stage.
