2018 New York State Senate Elections
The 2018 New York State Senate elections were held on November 6, 2018, to elect representatives from all 63 State Senate districts in the U.S. state of New York. Primary elections were held on September 13, 2018. In April 2018, ''The Wall Street Journal'' described the State Senate as the "last bastion of power" of the Republican Party in the State of New York. On Election Day, Democrats gained control of the chamber from the Republicans by picking up eight seats. The following day, ''The New York Times'' wrote that the Democrats had "decisively evict dRepublicans from running the State Senate, which they adcontrolled for all but three years since World War II". Enrolled Democrats won 40 of the chamber's 63 seats, including all but one seat in New York City and six of the nine seats on Long Island, the latter of which had been under total Republican control since the early 1970s. New York State Senate
The New York State Senate is the upper house of the New York State Legislature; the New York State Assembly is its lower house. Its members are elected to two-year terms; there are no term limits. There are 63 seats in the Senate. Partisan composition The New York State Senate was dominated by the Republican Party for much of the 20th century. Between World War II and the turn of the 21st century, the Democratic Party only controlled the upper house for one year. The Democrats took control of the Senate following the 1964 elections; however, the Republicans quickly regained a Senate majority in special elections later that year. Women's Equality Party (New York)
The Women's Equality Party was a minor political party active within the state of New York. It was founded in 2014 by Andrew Cuomo and appeared alongside his name on the 2014 and 2018 gubernatorial ballots under New York's electoral fusion law. The party encountered controversy due to endorsing the male Andrew Cuomo for governor over primary challengers Zephyr Teachout and Cynthia Nixon in 2014 and 2018, which has led to claims that the party was a front organization for Cuomo's gubernatorial campaigns in 2014 and 2018. Phil Boyle
Phillip Michael Boyle (born July 21, 1961) is an American politician who served as the Senator for the 4th District of the New York Senate from 2013 to 2022. He is a Republican. The district he served includes the villages of Babylon, Brightwaters, Lindenhurst, Ocean Beach, Saltaire in Suffolk County on Long Island. Early life and education Boyle was born in Bay Shore, New York, and grew up in Islip. Monica R. Martinez (born August 13, 1977) is a Salvadoran-American, civil servant, educator and politician from the state of New York. A Democrat, she is a member of the New York State Senate representing the 4th district. Martinez has also served in the Suffolk County Legislature, representing the 9th district. She is a former Assistant Principal at East Middle School in Brentwood, NY. Early life and career Martinez was born in El Salvador and moved to the United States at the age of 3. Thomas D. Croci is an American politician and naval officer from the state of New York. A Republican, Croci represented the 3rd District of the New York State Senate from 2015 through 2018. Kenneth LaValle
Kenneth P. LaValle (born May 22, 1939 in Brooklyn, New York) is a former American politician. He represented District 1 in the New York State Senate. The district comprises the five East End towns of Long Island, New York, as well as the central and eastern portions of the Town of Brookhaven, New York. A Republican, LaValle was first elected in 1976. He was the longest-serving member of the Senate and has served more terms in office than any other current state senator in the United States.
