2018 Mississippi State Bulldogs Football Team
The 2018 Mississippi State Bulldogs football team represented Mississippi State University in the 2018 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Bulldogs played their home games at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi and competed in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). They were led by first-year head coach Joe Moorhead. Mississippi State subsequently vacated all eight victories due to NCAA sanctions due to academic misconduct involving 10 players and a tutor in online coursework. Previous season The Bulldogs finished the 2017 season 9–4, 4–4 in SEC play to finish in a tie for fourth place in the Western Division. Joe Moorhead
Joe Moorhead (born November 2, 1973) is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the head coach at the University of Akron. He was the offensive coordinator at the University of Oregon from 2020 to 2021, and the head coach at Mississippi State University from 2018 to 2019. Prior to entering coaching, Moorhead played as a quarterback at Fordham University from 1992 to 1995 and professionally for the Munich Cowboys of the German Football League in 1996-1997. Coaching career Early years After a short professional playing career, the Pittsburgh-born Moorhead began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Pittsburgh. Greg Knox
Greg Knox (born September 10, 1963) is an American college football coach. He is a senior offensive analyst at Mississippi State University. Knox served as interim head football coach at Mississippi State for the final game of the 2017 and at the University of Florida for the final two games in 2021. From 2009 to 2021, he was Dan Mullen's running backs, first at Missisppii State and then at Florida. Although Knox was due to follow Mullen to Florida, he served as interim coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs in their victory at the 2017 TaxSlayer Bowl. Outland Trophy
The Outland Trophy is awarded to the best college football interior lineman in the United States as adjudged by the Football Writers Association of America. It is named after John H. Outland. One of only a few players ever to be named an All-American at two positions, Outland garnered consensus All-America honors in 1898 as a tackle and consensus honors as a halfback in 1899. Outland had always contended that football tackles and guards deserved greater recognition and conceived the Outland Trophy as a means of providing this recognition. Aeris Williams
Aeris Williams (born August 9, 1995) is a former American football running back for Mississippi State. Early years Williams was a 4-star recruit out of West Point High School after being named the Mississippi Association of Coaches 5A Offensive Player of the Year and WCBI-TV Offensive Player of the Year following a 1,697 rushing yards, 21 touchdown campaign his senior year. He was named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic and was a 2014 U.S. Army All-American Bowl nominee. College career During his junior season, Williams was the Bulldogs' first running back 1,000-yard rusher since 2014, when he put up 1,107 on 236 attempts. Doak Walker Award
Since 1990 the Doak Walker Award honors the top running back in college football in the United States. It is named in honor of Doak Walker, a former running back who played for the SMU Mustangs from 1945 to 1949 and in the National Football League for the Detroit Lions from 1950 to 1955. The player is selected by the award's National Selection Committee, which consists of notable sportswriters, television commentators, analysts, radio sports personalities and former All-America and NFL All-Pro football players. Davey O'Brien Award
The Davey O'Brien Award, officially the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, named after Davey O'Brien, is presented annually to the collegiate American football player judged by the Davey O'Brien Foundation to be the best of all National Collegiate Athletic Association quarterbacks. The Davey O'Brien Hall of Fame is housed at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The annual awards dinner and trophy presentation is held there as well, usually in February. Montez Sweat
Shaquan Montez Sweat (born September 4, 1996) is an American football defensive end for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Michigan State, Copiah–Lincoln, and Mississippi State before being drafted by the Washington Redskins in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
