2018 London Marathon
The 2018 London Marathon was the 38th running of the annual marathon race in London, England, which took place on Sunday, 22 April. Kenyans Eliud Kipchoge and Vivian Cheruiyot won elite races. In the wheelchair races, Britain's David Weir and Australia's Madison de Rozario topped the podium. Around 386,050 people applied to enter the race: 54,685 had their applications accepted and 40,926 started the race. These were all record highs for the race. A total of 40,179 runners, 23,701 men and 16,478 women, finished the race. The race was formally started by Queen Elizabeth. It was officially recorded as the hottest London Marathon to date at a peak temperature of . In the under-17 Mini Marathon, the 3-mile able-bodied and wheelchair events were won by Luke Duffy (14:24), Cera Gemmell (16:38), Zhou Zien (13:05) and Kare Adenegan (12:37). Daniel Kinyua Wanjiru (born 26 May 1992) is a Kenyan long-distance runner. He won both the 2016 Amsterdam Marathon and the 2017 London Marathon. Lawrence Cherono (born August 7, 1988) is a Kenyan long-distance runner. He is currently the 8th fastest marathon performer of all time with his 2:03:04 clocking at the 2020 Valencia Marathon. He clocked 2:04:06 to win the Amsterdam Marathon on October 21, 2018. He also won the Amsterdam Marathon in 2017, running a time of 2:05:09, setting the course record, which he broke in 2018. Kenenisa Bekele ( om, Qananiisaa baqqalaa; am, ቀነኒሳ በቀለ; born 13 June 1982) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. He was the world record holder in both the 5000-metre and 10000-metre from 2004 (5,000m) and 2005 (10,000m) until 2020. He won the gold medal in both the 5000 m and 10,000 m events at the 2008 Summer Olympics. At the 2004 Olympics, he won the gold medal in the 10,000 m and the silver medal in the 5000 m. Bedan Karoki Muchiri
Bedan Karoki Muchiri (born 21 August 1990) is a Kenyan professional long distance runner who competes in track, cross country and road running disciplines. He represented Kenya at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. He was a silver medallist at the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the 2016 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, and also in the 10,000 m at the 2011 All-Africa Games. Abel Kirui (born 6 April 1982) is a long-distance runner from Kenya who competes in marathons. He had back-to-back wins in the World Championship marathon in 2009 and 2011. Kirui won in 2009 with a time of 2:06:54, then defended his title with a winning margin of two minutes and 28 seconds – the largest ever margin at the World Championship event. Shura Kitata Tola (born 9 June 1996) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who competes in the marathon and half-marathon. Mary Jepkosgei Keitany (born 18 January 1982) is a Kenyan former professional long distance runner. She is the world record holder in a women-only marathon, having won the 2017 London Marathon in a time of 2:17:01. As of November 2022, she placed fifth on the world all-time list at the marathon and eleventh on the respective world all-time list for the half marathon. Her former half marathon best of 1:05:50 (2011) lived three years as the women's world record.
