The 2018 Italian Open (also known as the 2018 Rome Masters and sponsored title 2018 Internazionali BNL d'Italia) was a professional tennis tournament played on , outdoor clay courts at the Foro Italico in Rome, Italy from 14 to 20 May 2018. It was the 75th edition of the Italian Open and it is classified as an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event on the 2018 ATP World Tour and a Premier 5 event on the 2018 WTA Tour. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness. Grigor Dimitrov ( bg, Григор Димитров, ; born 16 May 1991) is a Bulgarian professional tennis player. He has been ranked as high as world No. 3 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), which he first achieved on 20 November 2017, making him the highest-ranked Bulgarian player in history. Pablo Carreño Busta (; born 12 July 1991) is a Spanish professional tennis player. Aljaž Bedene (born 18 July 1989) is a Slovenian former professional tennis player. He was a naturalised Briton and played with this nationality from 2015 to 2017, returning to represent Slovenia in 2018. Bedene has won six Futures and 16 Challenger singles titles.
