2018 Islington London Borough Council Election
The 2018 Islington London Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Islington London Borough Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. The council had previously had elections in 2014. The Labour Party retained control of the council, winning 47 of the 48 seats. The sole non-Labour councillor elected was Caroline Russell of the Green Party. Islington London Borough Council is the local authority for the London Borough of Islington in Greater London, England. The council was created by the London Government Act 1963 and replaced two local authorities: Finsbury Metropolitan Borough Council and Islington Metropolitan Borough Council. It is a London borough council, one of 32 in the United Kingdom capital of London. Islington is divided into 17 wards, each electing three councillors. 2018 United Kingdom Local Elections
Council elections in England were held on Thursday 3 May 2018. Elections were held in all 32 London boroughs, 34 metropolitan boroughs, 67 district and borough councils and 17 unitary authorities. There were also direct elections for the mayoralties of Hackney, Lewisham, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Watford. With the exception of those areas that have had boundary changes, the seats up for election were last contested in the 2014 local elections. 2014 Islington London Borough Council Election
The 2014 Islington Council election took place on 22 May 2014 to elect members of Islington Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. The final result was 47 seats for the Labour Party and 1 seat for the Green Party of England and Wales. The Labour Party received 56 per cent of the vote, its highest total in Islington since 1974. The Liberal Democrats lost all its seats despite having controlled the Council as a minority administration from 2006–2010. Caroline Russell, Lady Keating (born 10 August 1962) is a British politician and activist serving as Leader of the Green Party in the London Assembly since October 2018, and a Member of the London Assembly (AM) for Londonwide since May 2016. Early life and education Caroline Russell was born on 10 August 1962. She studied civil engineering at City, University of London, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree and studied fine art at Goldsmiths, University of London, graduating with a Master of Arts (MA) degree. She first moved to Islington in 1986. Political career Russell became engaged in politics after the death of a young child in a traffic incident near where she lived. Claudia Naomi Webbe (born 8 March 1965) is a British politician who is currently the Member of Parliament (MP) for Leicester East. Elected to Parliament for Labour in the 2019 general election, she currently sits as an independent. Born in Leicester, Webbe was a councillor in the London Borough of Islington from 2010 until her resignation in March 2021, having served as its cabinet member for environment and transport. She was a member of the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party from 2016 until her election to Parliament. Webbe is the first female MP for Leicester East. Richard Watts (born 1975), is a Labour Party politician. He is currently Deputy Chief of Staff to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. He was previously Council Leader of Islington London Borough Council, England. He was elected to that role in October 2013.
