2018 European Throwing Cup
The 2018 European Throwing Cup is held on 10–11 March at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa and National Throwing Centre in Leiria, Portugal. It is the eighteenth edition of the athletics competition for throwing events and was jointly organised by the European Athletic Association. The competition featured men's and women's contests in shot put, discus throw, javelin throw and hammer throw. Leiria
Leiria (; cel-x-proto, ɸlāryo) is a city and municipality in the Central Region of Portugal. It is the 2nd largest city in that same region, with a municipality population of 128,640 (as of 2021) in an area of . The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. The javelin throw is a track and field event where the javelin, a spear about in length, is thrown. The javelin thrower gains momentum by running within a predetermined area. Javelin throwing is an event of both the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. History The javelin throw was added to the Ancient Olympic Games as part of the pentathlon in 708 BC. It included two events, one for distance and the other for accuracy in hitting a target. The javelin was thrown with the aid of a thong ('' ankyle'' in Greek) that was wound around the middle of the shaft. Athletes held the javelin by the ''ankyle'', and when they released the shaft, the unwinding of the thong gave the javelin a spiral trajectory. Throwing javelin-like poles into targets was revived in Germany and Sweden in the early 1870s. Özkan Baltacı (born 13 February 1994) is a Turkish hammer thrower. In age-specific categories he won the silver medal at the 2011 World Youth Championships, the bronze medal at the 2011 European Youth Olympic Festival and finished tenth at the 2012 World Junior Championships. Paweł Fajdek (Polish pronunciation: ; born 4 June 1989) is a Polish hammer thrower, a five-time World Champion, European Champion, Olympic bronze medal winner, multiple Polish Champion and Polish men's hammer throw record holder. The hammer throw is one of the four throwing events in regular track and field competitions, along with the discus throw, shot put and javelin.
