2018 Dallas Wings Season
The 2018 WNBA season will be the 21st season for the Dallas Wings franchise of the Women's National Basketball Association, WNBA. This will be the franchise's 3rd season in Dallas. The season tips off on May 18. Dallas had an up and down start to the season, posting a 2–3 record in May followed by a 5–4 record in June. However all but one of these seven losses came to eventual playoff teams. The team posted an 8–5 record in July, including winning 7 of 8 games in the middle of the month. The three straight losses at the end of the month were the beginning of a nine-game losing streak. In the midst of that losing streak, on August 12, 2018 the Wings fired their head coach Fred Williams (basketball, born 1957), Fred Williams. The team had a 14–17 record and was in the 8th and final playoff spot at the time of firing. Assistant Coach Taj McWilliams-Franklin was named the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Williams served as an assistant coach at the University of Southern California from 1983 to 1990 and as head coach from 1995 to 1997. Williams coached the Utah Starzz (now the San Antonio Stars) of the Women's National Basketball Association, WNBA from 1999 to 2001 and later served as an assistant coach with the Charlotte Sting. 2018 New York Liberty Season
The 2018 WNBA season is the 22nd season for the New York Liberty franchise of the WNBA. The season tips off on May 20. During the off-season the Liberty hired Katie Smith as head coach. Smith replaced Bill Laimbeer, who left to coach the Las Vegas Aces. It was also announced in the offseason that the team would play its home games at the Westchester County Center. The 2018 season ended up being a difficult one for the Liberty. After having achieved a 22-win season in 2017, the team could only muster 7 wins in 2018. The team started 1–2 in May, but quickly fell behind the playoff pace going 3–9 in June. Things did not improve in July when the team went 3–7. The team finished the season on a thirteen-game losing streak, including an 0–9 August to finish the season 7–27. This was the franchise's worst record in its history.
