2018 Australia Day Honours
The 2018 Australia Day Honours are appointments to various orders and honours to recognise and reward good works by Australian citizens. The list was announced on 26 January 2018 by the Governor General of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove. The Australia Day Honours are the first of the two major annual honours lists, the first announced to coincide with Australia Day (26 January), with the other being the Queen's Birthday Honours, which are announced on the second Monday in June. Australian Honours System
The Australian honours and awards system refers to all Order (distinction), orders, decorations, and medals, as instituted by letters patent from the Monarchy of Australia, Monarch of Australia and countersigned by the Australian prime minister at the time, that have been progressively introduced since 14 February 1975. The Australian honours and awards system excludes all state and local government, and private, issued awards and medals (although a few can be recognised in the Australian Honours Order of Wearing, order of wearing, like those in the Order of Saint John (chartered 1888), Order of St John). Jeffrey Rosenfeld
Jeffrey Victor Rosenfeld (born 1952) is an Australian Neurosurgery, neurosurgeon and professor of medicine. He is a senior neurosurgeon in the Department of Neurosurgery at The Alfred Hospital, and the Emeritus Professor of Surgery at Monash University, as well as being a Major general (Australia), major general in the Australian Defence Force, where he has served as a general surgeon since 1984. His research has focussed on traumatic brain injury, bionic vision, and medical engineering. He is best known for devising an operation to remove hypothalamic haematomas from children's brains. Liz Ellis
Elizabeth Margaret Ellis, (born 17 January 1973) is a retired Australian netball player, a member of the national team from 1992 until 2007 and captain for the last four of those years. She is the most capped international player for Australian netball. Liz Ellis was inducted to the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2006. Early life and education Ellis was born in Windsor, New South Wales, on 17 January 1973. Creswell Eastman
Creswell John Eastman (born 30 March 1940) is the Clinical Professor of Medicine at Sydney University Medical School, Principal of the Sydney Thyroid Clinic and Consultant Emeritus to the Westmead Hospital. Eastman is an endocrinologist and has directed or conducted research and public health projects into elimination of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, several Pacific Islands, Hong Kong, China and Tibet and Australia. For his work in remote areas of China, he has been dubbed the "man who saved a million brains". In 2013 Eastman expressed concern that IDD may be affecting Australian children's ability to perform at school and reiterated that view in 2016. Belinda Clark
Belinda Jane Clark (born 10 September 1970) is an Australian former cricketer and sports administrator. A right-handed batter, she served as the captain of the national women's team for eleven years and was a member of triumphant World Cup campaigns in 1997 and 2005. Mark Cameron Burry (born 24 February 1957) is a New Zealand architect. He is the Foundation Director of Swinburne University of Technology’s Smart Cities Research Institute. Michael Barber (academic)
Michael Newton Barber (born 30 April 1947) is a mathematician, physicist and academic. He was Vice Chancellor of Flinders University in South Australia from 2008 until 2014. Career Barber studied at the University of New South Wales, where he received the University Medal in applied mathematics and graduated with first class honours. He received a PhD from Cornell University in the USA in theoretical physics in 1972. He is best known for the scaling theory of finite size effects at phase transitions, which he introduced together with Michael Fisher. Martin Gerhardt Banwell , Hon.FRSNZ (born 24 November 1954) is an organic chemist specialising in biotransformations and natural product synthesis. His research interests involve the enzymatic preparation of organic molecules as synthons or building blocks for complex natural products. Rosalie Pam Balkin (born 1950) is an Australian maritime lawyer, international legal scholar and public servant. Rosalie Pam Balkin was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1950.
