2017–18 WNBL Season
The 2017–18 WNBL season was the 38th season of the competition since its establishment in 1981. The regular season began on 5 October 2017, with the Melbourne Boomers visiting the Dandenong Rangers. The Sydney Uni Flames were the defending champions but were defeated in the Semi Finals by Townsville. The Townsville Fire took home their third WNBL championship after defeating Melbourne, 2–0. This season sees the return to television, with Fox Sports broadcasting the WNBL for the first time since 2015. Spalding once again provided equipment including the official game ball, whilst iAthletic took over supplying team apparel. Women's National Basketball League
The Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) is the pre-eminent professional women's basketball league in Australia. It is currently composed of eight teams. The league was founded in 1981 and is the women's counterpart to the National Basketball League (NBL). Several WNBL teams have NBL counterparts. The Adelaide Lightning, Melbourne Boomers, Perth Lynx, Southside Flyers and Sydney Uni Flames are the current WNBL teams sharing a market with an NBL team (the Townsville Fire and University of Canberra Capitals shared a market with the Townsville Crocodiles and Canberra Cannons respectively, before both NBL clubs became defunct). Adelaide Lightning
The Adelaide Lightning is an Australian professional women's basketball team competing in the Women's National Basketball League ( WNBL). The club is based in the city of Adelaide, South Australia. The club was formed in 1993 and they play in the 8,000-seat Titanium Security Arena. History The Adelaide Lightning were formed in 1993 and started playing out of the Clipsal Powerhouse. Since the early 2000s the team has tended to alternate between their current home at the Adelaide Arena (formerly the Powerhouse) and the Wayville Sports Centre located within the Adelaide Showgrounds. The Lightning have won the WNBL Championship five times (1994, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2008). Carley Mijović
Carley Monika Ernst (; born 1 August 1994) is an Australian professional basketball player. Career WNBL Mijović began her professional career in 2009 when she joined the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) for the 2009–10 WNBL season. She managed just four games in her first season and went on to sit out the entire 2010–11 season after undergoing a second knee operation. She returned to the AIS line-up in 2011–12 and played out her first full season. She subsequently earned WNBL Rookie of the Year honours after averaging 9.1 points and 5.2 rebounds in 18 games. In May 2012, Mijović signed with the Dandenong Rangers for the 2012–13 WNBL season. In 23 games for Dandenong, she averaged 6.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Sara Blicavs
Sara Blicavs ( lv, Sāra Blicava; born 15 February 1993) is an Australian professional basketball player. She currently plays for the Southside Flyers in the WNBL Blicavs was a member of the Australian Women's basketball team (Opals) at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Opals were eliminated after losing to the USA in the quarterfinals. Career Blicavs plays in the guard or forward positions. WNBL Blicavs began her career, playing for the Australian Institute of Sport. After a brief stint with the Dandenong Rangers, Blicavs moved to the Bendigo Spirit. Colleen Planeta (born September 3, 1988) is an American professional basketball player. Career College Planeta played college basketball at the Point Loma Nazarene University for the Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions in San Diego, California. Europe Since leaving college, Planeta played in several different leagues across Europe. Lee played in nations such as Portugal, Greece, Germany and Luxembourg. Katie-Rae Ebzery
Katie-Rae Ebzery (born 8 January 1990) is an Australian former professional basketball player who played 15 seasons in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). She was a three-time All-WNBL First Team member and a two-time Olympian with the Australian Opals. Early life Ebzery was born in Waratah, New South Wales. From a young age, she would watch her mum and cousins play basketball. She started playing socially at the age of five, and by the age of nine she was playing representative basketball for the Newcastle Hunters. She attended St Mary's High School in Newcastle. Bendigo Spirit
Bendigo Spirit is one of three Victorian basketball teams in the Australian Women's National Basketball League. The team, based in the regional city of Bendigo, Victoria, joined the competition from the 2007/08 season. History The Bendigo Spirit were formed in 2007 and started playing out of Bendigo Stadium, the first side based in regional Victoria. Coached by Bernie Harrower, the team was led by his daughter, Australian Opal and captain, Kristi Harrower. Nadeen Payne
Nadeen Payne (born 7 June 1993) is an Australian professional basketball player. She currently plays for the Townsville Fire in the WNBL. Career WNBL Payne began her WNBL career with the Australian Institute of Sport. She would then return home and play for her home side, Townsville Fire. This was followed by two seasons with the Adelaide Lightning. After a year away from the game, Payne returned with the new look South East Queensland Stars. After the Stars became defunct, Payne was signed by the Bendigo Spirit for 2016–17. Payne will re-join the Spirit for a second consecutive season, after signing on for 2017–18. Nicole Seekamp (born 26 April 1992) is an Australian professional basketball player. College Seekamp played college basketball at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota for the Coyotes. After sitting out the 2011–12 season as a redshirt, Seekamp made her debut in 2012. Jordan Hooper (born February 20, 1992) is an American basketball player. She last played for the Atlanta Dream of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was an All-American forward at the college level for the University of Nebraska. High school Hooper grew up on a ranch outside Alliance, Nebraska.
