Syrian Premier League
The Syrian Premier League ( ar, الدوري السوري الممتاز) is a professional association football league in Syria and the top division in of the Syrian football league system. The league comprises 12 teams and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Syrian League 1st Division. The Syrian Premier League was founded in 1966, unifying the local leagues that had existed previously. Seasons mostly run from August to May. The first team to win the title was Al-Ittihad in 1967, whilst Al-Jaish has the record with 17 league titles. Their closest rivals, Al-Karamah, have won the league 8 times. In the beginning, the main tournament was the first division, then the SFA developed the competition in a historic step that allowed the participation of foreign players to turn the competition into a professional league. Tishreen Stadium ( ar, مَلْعَب تِشْرِين, Malʿab Tišrīn) is a multi-use all-seater stadium in Damascus, Syria, currently used mostly for football matches and serves as the home venue of the al-Shorta SC. Al-Majd Sports Club ( ar, نادي المجد الرياضي) is a Syrian football club based in Damascus, Syria. The club is insignificant compared to the city rival Al-Wahda, but more popular than the other rival Al-Jaish. History The club was founded in 1932 under the name of Damascus Al-Ahly Club, and is one of the oldest football clubs in Damascus and the whole country. The club's greatest success is the Syrian cup victory in the 1960/61 and 1977/78 season. At the end of the 2007/08 season of Premier League, the club was runner-up and thus achieved its highest ranking in the league at all. As a runner-up in the league, they automatically qualified for the AFC Cup 2009. The biggest success of the club in recent years is the final of the Syrian Cup from the 2019/20 season. Khalid ibn al-Walid Stadium () is a multi-use stadium located in the Syrian city of Homs. It is the 3rd-largest football stadium in Syria and is mostly used for football matches. It serves as a home ground of Al-Karamah SC and Al-Wathba SC and holds around 32,000 spectators. History The greater part of the necropolis of Tell Abu Sabun was made to disappear by 1952 in order to build the stadium.
