2017–18 NWHL Season
The 2017–18 NWHL season was the third season of the National Women's Hockey League. All four teams from the previous two seasons returned for this season: the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, and the Metropolitan Riveters. League news and notes *In October 2017, the Russian women's national team participated in exhibition series, called the 2017 Summit Series, going 5–0 against the Pride, Riveters, and Whale. National Women's Hockey League
The Premier Hockey Federation (PHF), formerly the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), is a women's professional ice hockey league located in the United States and Canada. The league was established in 2015 with four league-owned teams and has since grown to a mixture of seven independently owned teams: the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps, Montreal Force and Toronto Six. The Isobel Cup, the league's championship trophy, is awarded annually to the league playoff champion at the end of each season. USA Hockey
USA Hockey is the national ice hockey organization in the United States. It is recognized by the International Olympic Committee and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee as the Sport governing body, governing body for organized ice hockey in the United States and is a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation. Before June 1991, the organization was known as the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States (AHAUS). The organization is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Isobel Cup
The Lady Isobel Gathorne-Hardy Cup, often shortened to Isobel Cup, is the championship trophy awarded annually to the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) playoff winner. It is named after Lady Isobel Gathorne-Hardy, one of the first known women to play the game and daughter of Lord Stanley (the namesake of the Stanley Cup, and former Governor-General of Canada). The front of the trophy is engraved with "The Lady Isobel Gathorne-Hardy Cup 1875–1963. This Cup, shall be awarded annually to the greatest professional women's hockey team in North America. All who pursue this Cup, pursue a dream; a dream born with Isobel, that shall never die. EST. 2016." Overtime (ice Hockey)
Overtime is a method of determining a winner in an ice hockey game when the score is tied after regulation. The main methods of determining a winner in a tied game are the overtime period (commonly referred to as overtime), the shootout, or a combination of both. If league rules dictate a finite time in which overtime may be played, with no penalty shoot-out to follow, the game's winning team may or may not be necessarily determined. Overtime periods Overtime periods are extra periods beyond the third regulation period during a game, where normal hockey rules apply. 3rd NWHL All-Star Game
The 3rd NWHL All-Star Game took place on February 11, 2018 at TRIA Rink in Saint Paul, Minnesota. A skills competition was held the day prior on February 10, 2018. Brittany Ott of the Boston Pride and Amanda Leveille of the Buffalo Beauts served as All-Star captains. Of note, Leveille became the first Canadian-born player to serve as a captain in the NWHL All-Star Game. The coaches for the event were Minnesota Whitecaps legend Winny Brodt for Team Leveille, while Winter Games gold medalist Tricia Dunn served in the same capacity with Team Ott. The game was contested in two 25-minute periods. With the contest held in Minnesota, each team featured one member of the Minnesota Whitecaps on its roster. Amanda Leveille
Amanda Leveille (born June 10, 1994) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender for the Minnesota Whitecaps of the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF). She currently holds the PHF record for all-time wins, and has won the Isobel Cup twice. Career Early career As a youth player, Leveille played on AAA boys teams, being named best goaltender at the 2011 Canadian National U18 Championship. In 2011, she joined the Ottawa Lady Senators, where she would stay for her last two years of high school. University During college, Leveille played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers women's ice hockey program for four seasons between 2012 and 2016. She posted three shutouts in her first three starts, not giving up a single goal in the 7 games she played in her first season serving as backup to Noora Räty. Brittany Ott
Brittany "The Otter" Ott (born June 12, 1990) is an American professional ice hockey player. , Ott plays for the New Hampshire region team in the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association. She previously played two seasons for the Boston Blades in the Canadian Women's Hockey League and four seasons with Boston Pride of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). Ott played college hockey for the Maine Black Bears before declaring herself into the 2013 CWHL Draft. She is the first goaltender to have won the Clarkson Cup and the Isobel Cup in a career. Thomas Pöck
Thomas Dietmar Pöck (born 2 December 1981) is an Austrian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He played in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders. Playing career As a youth, Pöck played in the 1994 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a team from Austria. Pöck was a star forward turned defenceman for the University of Massachusetts Amherst Minutemen, an NCAA Division I Hockey East team. Pöck was never drafted in the NHL, but signed his first pro contract upon completing his senior year on 23 March 2004 with the New York Rangers. He immediately made his NHL debut at the end of the 2003–04 season. Bob Jay
Robert Gould Jay (born November 18, 1965) is an American former professional ice hockey player and coach. He appeared in three games for the Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League (NHL) during the 1993–94 season, and played nine seasons in the International Hockey League (IHL) between 1990 and 1999. After his playing career ended, Jay turned to coaching, most notably as an assistant to Ted Donato at Harvard University from 2004 to 2007 and again from 2009 to 2011. He has been an assistant coach for the United States women's national ice hockey team through several campaigns including the Sochi Olympics where the team won a silver medal. The Buffalo Sabres are a professional ice hockey team based in Buffalo, New York.
