2017–18 FIS Snowboard World Cup
The 2017–18 FIS Snowboard World Cup was the 24th World Cup season in snowboarding organised by International Ski Federation. The season started on 4 September 2017 in Cardrona, New Zealand and concluded on 24 March 2018 in Quebec City, Canada. Nevin Galmarini
Nevin Galmarini (born 4 December 1986) is a Swiss snowboarder and Olympic Champion. In February 2018, Nevin Galmarini won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea in the Parallel giant slalom. In 2009, he won the Swiss nationalships and became the Swiss champion in parallel giant slalom. He competed in the parallel giant slalom for Switzerland during the 2010 Winter Olympic games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and in the 2014 Winter Olympic games in Sochi, Russia where he won the silver medal. Cardrona, New Zealand
Cardrona is the name of a locality in the Cardrona Valley in New Zealand, with the nearby skifield of Cardrona Alpine Resort and Mount Cardrona also using the same name. Established as a gold rush township in the 1860s on the banks of the small river of the same name, it is known for its distinctive hotel of gold rush vintage which is on the opposite side of the river to the original township of which few buildings remain. It is in a scenic setting on the Crown Range road which connects Wanaka and Queenstown. Paul Berg (born 26 September 1991) is a German snowboarder, specializing in snowboard cross. Berg competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics for Germany. In the snowboard cross Snowboard cross, also known as boardercross, is a snowboard competition in which four to six competitors race down a course. Val Thorens
Val Thorens (), is a ski town located in the Tarentaise Valley, Savoie, French Alps at an altitude of . It is located in the commune of Saint-Martin-de-Belleville in the Savoie department. The resort forms part of the Les Trois Vallées ski area which, with over 600 km of piste, is one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. Resort In 1971 the first of three drag lifts was installed, followed in 1972 by the opening of the first ski school. Skiing The resort is usually open from mid-November until early May. Alessandro Hämmerle (born 30 July 1993) is a Swiss-born Austrian snowboarder, and Olympic gold medalist in the snowboard cross. Hämmerle competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics for Austria. In the snowboard cross, he finished 2nd in his 1/8 round race, advancing to the quarter-finals, where he placed 5th, not advancing, and ending up 17th overall. Jonathan Cheever (born April 17, 1985) is an American snowboarder. He is an athlete on the U.S. Snowboarding's SBX A Team. In 2011, he was named the U.S. snowboarding champion and took two World Cup 2nd-place finishes at Stoneham Mountain Resort in Quebec and Chiesa in Valmalenco in Italy. Becoming the second American male ever in his discipline to win the world cup. In 2011, he was ranked third in the world in snowboard cross (SBX). Still no U.S. man has won a FIS World Cup title in SBX. Jonathan is ranked 7th in 2017-2018 FIS World Cup standings after two races. Alex Pullin (20 September 1987 – 8 July 2020), nicknamed Chumpy, was an Australian snowboarder who competed at the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics. He was a two-time snowboard cross (boardercross) world champion. Early life Pullin was born on 20 September 1987 in Mansfield, Victoria. He started snowboarding at a young age, and came to prefer snowboard cross, because he considered it "the most pure form of competition". His parents owned a ski hire shop. Career Pullin competed for Australia at the 2010 Winter Olympics in snowboard cross (boardercross). Cerro Catedral
Cerro Catedral is a mountain located from San Carlos de Bariloche, and inside the Nahuel Huapí National Park, in Patagonia, Argentina. The mountain is the biggest ski center in South America and in the Southern Hemisphere, with a skiable area of , of ski runs, and a lift capacity of 35,000 skiers per hour. Big Air
Big air is a high-injury-risk sports discipline where the competitor rides a vehicle, such as a motocross motorcycle, a skateboard, a snowboard, or a pair of skis, down a hill or ramp and performs aerial tricks after launching off very large jumps. In most versions, there is one large jump and therefore only one opportunity to perform a trick. It is an extreme version of slopestyle. Competitors perform complex tricks in the air, aiming to attain sizable height and distance as well, all while making every effort to secure a clean landing. Many competitions also require the rider to do a specific trick to win the major prize. The term was coined by French-Canadians because of their love for the extreme nature of the event. Slopestyle
Slopestyle is a winter sport in which athletes ski or snowboard down a course including a variety of obstacles including rails, jumps and other terrain park features. Points are scored for amplitude, originality and quality of tricks. The discipline has its roots in action sports like skateboarding and BMX and has very successfully crossed over into the snow sports worlds of skiing and snowboarding. Skiers use Twin-tip skis for their symmetry since they often go large portions of the course backward (referred to as "switch") and for their balanced weight so as to not destabilize spins. Slopestyle tricks fall mainly into four categories: spins, grinds, grabs and flips, and most tricks done in competition are a combination of these.
