2017 World Para Athletics Championships – Men's 800 Metres
The men's 800 metres at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships was held at the Olympic Stadium in London from 14 to 23 July. The results of the men's 800 m T54 race on Monday 17 July were nullified and the race rescheduled to Friday 21 July after three competitors crashed at the 600-metre mark. Marcel Hug won the original race. The race took place on Friday evening without Richard Chiassaro who had been disqualified. Medalists Events listed in pink were contested but no medals were awarded. 800 Metres
The 800 metres, or meters ( US spelling), is a common track running event. It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-metre) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-metre track. The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half mile (880 yards), a traditional English racing distance. 800m is 4.67m less than a half mile. The event combines aerobic endurance with anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed, so the 800m athlete has to combine training for both. Runners in this event are occasionally fast enough to also compete in the 400 metres but more commonly have enough endurance to 'double up' in the 1500m. James Turner (parathlete)
James Michael Apsley Turner, (born 22 May 1996) is an Australian Paralympic athlete and soccer player with cerebral palsy. He has represented Australia as part of the Australia Paralympic soccer team, the ParaRoos, and was its player of the year in 2013. At the 2016 Summer Paralympics, he won the Men's 800m T36 in a world record time of 2:02.39. At the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London, he won three gold medals; he followed this up with two gold medals at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai and a gold and silver medal at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Liu Yang (wheelchair Racer)
Liu Yang (born 10 April 1990) is a Paralympian athlete from China competing mainly in T54 classification sprint events. Before achieving success as an athlete, Liu ventured into para-cycling, but switched shortly after his international cycling debut. Paracycling career Liu took up para-sport in 2006, and at first looked at para-cycling where he was classified as a handcyclist. He competed at the 2007 UCI Para-Cycling World Championships in Boudreaux, where he failed to qualify for the final of the road race, and finished 17th in the time trial. Athletics career Liu first represented China as a wheelchair racer at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand. Marcel Hug
Marcel Eric Hug (born 16 January 1986) is a Paralympian athlete from Switzerland competing in category T54 wheelchair racing events. Hug, nicknamed 'The Silver Bullet', has competed in four Summer Paralympic Games for Switzerland, winning two bronze medals in his first Games in Athens in 2004. In 2010 he set four world records in four days, and at the 2011 World Championships he won a gold in the 10,000 metres and four silver medals, losing the gold in three events to long term rival David Weir. This rivalry continued into the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, where Hug won two silvers, in the 800m and the marathon. T54 is a disability sport classification for disability athletics in the track and jump events. The class includes people with spinal cord injuries who compete using a wheelchair in track events. They have paraplegia, but have normal hand and arm function, normal or limited trunk function, and no leg function. This class includes CP-ISRA classes CP3 and CP4, and some athletes in ISOD classes A1, A2 and A3. Definition This classification is for track and jump events in disability athletics. Pongsakorn Paeyo (, , ; born 1 December 1996) is a Thai wheelchair racer in the T53 classification. Paeyo represented Thailand at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Paralympics. Pierre Fairbank
Pierre Fairbank (born 27 July 1971) is a Paralympian athlete from France and New Caledonia competing mainly in category T53 sprint events. Fairbank first competed in the Paralympics in 2000 in Sydney where he won a gold in the T53 200m, a silver in the T53 400m and a bronze in the T53 800m, he also competed in the T54 Marathon. Brent Lakatos
Brent Lakatos (born 1 June 1980) is a Canadian wheelchair racer in the T53 classification. Lakatos has represented Canada at three Summer Paralympics, and at the 2012 Games he won three silver medals in the sprint and mid-distance events. In 2013 Lakatos reached the pinnacle of his sport when he collected four gold medals at the IPC Athletics World Championships and became world champion at his classification in the 100m, 200m and 400m events. Personal history Lakatos came from a sporting family and was swimming by the age of four. When he was six years-old a freak ice-skating accident resulted in the formation of a blood clot on his spine that left his legs paralyzed. T53 (classification)
T53 is disability sport classification for disability athletics. The class includes people with a number of different types of disabilities including spinal cord injuries. People in this class have full use of their arms but have no or limited trunk function. Similar classifications are T51, T52, and T54. People in this class have a functional upper limbs, but limited trunk usage and limited lower limb functionality. During classification, they both undergo a bench test of muscle strength and demonstrate their skills in athletics. Deon Kenzie
Deon Kenzie (born 11 March 1996) is an Australian Para athlete who competes in the T38 (classification) prominently in the 1500m. He has won medals at the 2013, 2015 and 2017 World Para Athletics Championships including gold in the Men's 1500 m T38 in 2017. Michael Gerard McKillop (born 27 January 1990 in Ballymena, Northern Ireland) is an Irish middle distance runner. He competes in the T37 disability sport classification, as he has a mild form of cerebral palsy. He won the 800m title at the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships, clocking just over 2:02. and he represented Ireland at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, winning a gold medal at the T37 800 m clipping almost three seconds off his previous mark as he strode to an emphatic win in 1:59.41.
