The third edition of the women's Strade Bianche was held on 4 March 2017, in Tuscany, Italy. Elisa Longo Borghini won the race, in bad weather, ahead of Katarzyna Niewiadoma and the previous year's champion, Lizzie Deignan. The women's Strade Bianche served as the first event of the second UCI Women's World Tour, the highest level of professional women's cycling. The race is organized on the same day as the men's event, at a shorter distance, but on much of the same roads. 2017 UCI Women's World Tour
The 2017 UCI Women's World Tour was the second edition of the UCI Women's World Tour. For the 2017 season, the calendar consisted of 20 races, up from 17 in 2016. Two one-day races – the Amstel Gold Race and Liège–Bastogne–Liège, to complete an Ardennes classics week – were added along with the Ladies Tour of Norway and the Holland Ladies Tour; all 2016 races returned for the 2017 calendar, with the exception of the cancelled Philadelphia International Cycling Classic. The individual classification was won by Dutch rider Anna van der Breggen, riding for the team. Van der Breggen took the lead of the standings after winning the Tour of California, and after losing the lead to Poland's Katarzyna Niewiadoma () after the Women's Tour, van der Breggen regained the lead after victory at the Giro d'Italia Femminile. Elena Cecchini (born 25 May 1992) is an Italian racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Women's WorldTeam . She competed in the 2013 UCI women's team time trial in Florence. Career In 2013 and 2014, she rode for the team. In November 2015 she was announced as part of the team's inaugural squad for the 2016 season. She remained with the team until the end of the 2020 season; in August 2020, she signed a two-year contract with the team, from the 2021 season. Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (born 23 August 1995) is a Danish professional road cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Women's WorldTeam . Career As a junior, she competed at the 2012 UCI Road World Championships and the 2013 UCI Road World Championships. In the 2018 La Course by Le Tour de France she finished in 4th place, with her teammate Ashleigh Moolman taking the final podium place. She also took the mountains classification in this race. After this race she gave her first of what would become several excitable interviews, with this one including advice for any cyclist who has bad legs to have their wisdom teeth removed. Amanda Spratt (born 17 September 1987) is an Australian road cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Women's WorldTeam . Spratt was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics. In 2012, 2016 and 2020 she won the Australian National Road Race Championships in Buninyong, Victoria. In 2018, she secured the silver medal in the UCI Road World Championships in Innsbruck, Austria. Katrin Garfoot
Katrin Garfoot (born 8 October 1981) is a German-born Australian former cyclist who won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the road time trial. She started cycle racing in 2011, three years after moving to Australia, having previously competed in athletics up to junior level. In addition to this, Katrin was a teacher at Southport State High School on the Gold Coast. At the 2016 UCI Road World Championships she won the bronze medal in the women's time trial, 8 seconds behind the winner Amber Neben. In the 2017 road world championships, Garfoot became the second Australian after Anna Wilson to achieve two individual medals at the same road world championships, with a bronze in the individual time trial and a silver in the road race. Shara Gillow (born 23 December 1987) is an Australian former professional cyclist, who competed professionally between 2011 and 2020, for the , , and teams. She was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 Summer Olympics, where she finished 13th in the time trial and 39th in the road race. Personal Gillow was born on 23 December 1987 in Nambour, Queensland. Her father David Gillow is an Olympic cyclist who represented Zimbabwe at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Van Vleuten is a two-time winner of both the road race (2019 and 2022) and the time trial (2017 and 2018) at the UCI Road World Championships. Strade Bianche
The Strade Bianche is a road bicycle race in Tuscany, Central Italy, starting and finishing in Siena. First held in 2007, it is raced annually on the first or second Saturday of March. The name ''Strade Bianche'' (Italian for ''White Roads'') stems from the historic white gravel roads in the Crete Senesi, which are a defining feature of the race. One third of the total race distance is raced on dirt roads, covering 63 km of ''strade bianche'', spread over 11 sectors. Despite its short history, the Strade Bianche has quickly gained prestige, and instigated a renewed interest in road racing on gravel and dirt roads as a specific skill and discipline. The event is part of the UCI World Tour, cycling's highest level of professional road races. History In 1995 Australian Bill Mitchell, a keen cyclist and professor of economics at the University of Newcastle, created the website titled "Bill’s Cycling Racing Results and News" after finding there was a need for fast-breaking news and race results in English-speaking countries. In 1999 Sydney-based publishing company Knapp Communications purchased the website from Mitchell, and in July 2007 they sold it to British publisher Future plc for £2.2m. Elisa Longo Borghini (born 10 December 1991) is an Italian professional road cyclist, who rides for UCI Women's WorldTeam . During her career, Longo Borghini has won two bronze medals in the road race at the Summer Olympic Games, taking third-place finishes in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. She has also won two bronze medals in the equivalent event at the UCI Road World Championships, doing so in 2012 and 2020.
