As part of the British honours system, Special Honours are issued at the Monarch's pleasure at any given time. The Special Honours refer to the awards made within royal prerogative, operational honours and other honours awarded outside the New Years Honours and Birthday Honours. British Honours System
In the United Kingdom and the British Overseas Territories, personal bravery, achievement, or service are rewarded with honours. The honours system consists of three types of award: *Honours are used to recognise merit in terms of achievement and service; *Decorations tend to be used to recognise specific deeds; *Medals are used to recognise service on a particular operation or in a specific theatre, long or valuable service, and good conduct. Appointments to the various orders and awards of other honours are usually published in ''The London Gazette''. Nicholas Houghton
General John Nicholas Reynolds Houghton, Baron Houghton of Richmond, ( ; born 18 October 1954) is a retired senior British Army officer and former Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the British Armed Forces. He was appointed CDS in July 2013, following the retirement of General Sir David Richards. He served as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, the Green Howards in Northern Ireland during The Troubles and later became Commander of the 39th Infantry Brigade in Northern Ireland. He deployed as Senior British Military Representative and Deputy Commanding General, Multi-National Force – Iraq during the Iraq War. Later, he became Chief of Joint Operations at Permanent Joint Headquarters and served as Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff until assuming the position of CDS. Julian Knowles (judge)
Sir Julian Bernard Knowles (born 26 January 1969) is a British High Court judge. Educational and early life Knowles was born in Manchester and lived in Wythenshawe council estate. He was educated at comprehensives St John Plessington High School and Xaverian College. He studied at Balliol College, Oxford and completed a BA in mathematics in 1990. At Oxford he was offered a place to complete a DPhil in mathematics, but decided to pursue law after volunteering as a paralegal to help death row inmates in Oklahoma. Career He was called to the bar at Inner Temple in 1994. At the bar, he specialised in criminal law and public law and practised from Matrix Chambers. Julian Goose
Sir Julian Nicholas Goose (born 26 July 1961) is a British High Court judge. Goose was educated at Birkdale School and Silverdale School. He completed an LLB at the University of Leeds. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1984. He served as a recorder from 1998 to 2013 and took silk in 2002. He has head of chambers at Zenith Chambers from 2004 to 2013. He served as a senior circuit judge and resident judge at Sheffield Combined Court Centre from 2013 to 2017; he was honorary recorder of Sheffield for the same period. Akhlaq Ur-Rahman Choudhury
Sir Akhlaq Ur-Rahman Choudhury ( bn, আখালেক উর-রহমান চৌধুরী; born 23 April 1967) is a British High Court judge of England and Wales. In 2017, he was made Knight Bachelor on appointment, becoming the first British-Bangladeshi and Muslim to be appointed to the High Court of Justice. Early life Choudhury was born in Winchester, Hampshire, England to a Bengali Muslim family. When he was four years old, his family moved to Scotland where he grew up in Bishopbriggs on the outskirts of Glasgow. Choudhury's Sylheti parents had migrated to the United Kingdom before the Bangladesh Liberation War from Zakiganj, Sylhet District, in erstwhile East Pakistan.
